members of the above-named Society met in their Hall for the purpose of bringing their Debating Club to a close for the sea- son. After the routine business of the Institute had been gone throtigh, Mr. Thomas Pierce was elected chairman for the evening.

The President (Mr. John McKachern) then addressed the meeting, and very ably reviewed the working of the Institute dur- ing the season just closing, and noted with pleasure the progress made and the friendly and harmonious feeling existing among all members, which clearly indicates the many benefits derived from well-organized insti- tutions of this kind. He was followed by John F, Mellick, . McPhee, J. J. Camp- bell and F. J. McKinnon, all endorsing the sentiments expressed by the President, and congratulating the members upon the favorable auspices under which the Society wes closing.

Since its re-organization this Society has met on Thursday night of each week, for the purpore of discussing subjects pertain- ing to the moral, intellectual and mental culture of its members. The following are a few of the many subjects discussed, viz : ‘*Which ia the better form of Government —Monarchial or Presidental?’’? ‘ Are Political parties a benefit to the State ?” ‘*Which confers the most benefit on Society —the Platform or the Press /’ ‘‘Was the sending of Napoleon Bonaparte to St. Helena justifiable?” “Which exercises

The young man saw the deed and tried to grab the thief, but the girls clung to his arma and cried, “don’t go, he'll kill you,” and more tu that effect, until the thief got well away.
