English Society Ramble By Scott Pound

"The writing of poetry is a superior amusement." -T.S. Eliot

And indeed, Mr. Eliot was right, as the many creative writers here at UPEI can attest. The English Society recently gathered together some of this amusement, along with its various authors, in the form of an open-microphone reading in the English lounge. This, the first STUDENT reading in recent memory, was a very formidable and enjoyable get-together for both poets and poetry-lovers alike. Several genres of writing were represented, namely: poetry, short story, creation, myth (wow!), and non-fiction sketch. A hearty thank-you goes out to those who were courageous enough to share. their work with the rest of us. Likewise, a hearty "BOO" to those others whose work is known to be exceptional, but who declined to read. Don’t worry, we'll get you next time! Incidentally, it is a testament to the creative ability of many students that we were able to have such a successful reading, and yet only scrap the surface of the body of writing that is floating around UPEI these days. For this reason, the society is planning at least two more readings for this academic year for which we hope to solicit more readers and more listeners. In closing, the society would like to thank all those who attended the reading.

T-shirts portraying the newly-designed English Society logo are On order. Most are spoken for, but a few are left and cost $10 each. The choice of colours is red and white on black, OR, green and black on white. Money for these will be accepted until Monday, November 12, by Rob Coffin or Kheng- Wee. The next society meeting is on Monday, November 12 at 3:00 pm.

A reminder to all society members: membership fees of $5 are due at the next meeting. And as always, new members are very welcome.

Also, on November 22, we are planning a social gathering for the English Department. Read next week’s paper for details.

Modern language Club

On behalf of the Modern Language Club, I'd like to thank all those who contributed to make the Modern Language Hallowe’en Pub a success. I’d like to thank all those who turned out as well as everyone who contributed time and effort in the organization of the pub. Special thanks go to the businesses who sponsored us: Shopper’s Drug Mart, Charlottetown Mall (Great treat bags), Moosehead Breweries, UPEI Bookstore, CFCY, and Cow’s. Congratulations to the winners of the costume judging Mike Creighan, Shane Curley, Jo-Anna Murphy, Andrea MacFadyen, and Aaron ?.

This coming week we’ll have the normal Wednesday noon meetings and and thursday a French luncheon, both in the Modern language Lounge, third floor Main. We've decided to go to Paris! Anyone interested, please come to our meetings or call Mary at 368-2405. More details soon to follow about Paris for the February break.
