There are many things that can be said about the Sebutones, a hip hop supergroup featuring Halifax’s Buck 65 and Sixtoo. Recently I had the opportunity to catch them spouting off.

The sound of this group is known in pockets around the world, wherever the advancement of hip hop is on the mind of people. After the release of three albums, and winning over fans across the globe, many would be surprised by the initial plans for the group.

“It wasn’t so much a joke as we thought we’d put Psoriasis [the group’s first album] together, which was a pretty short album, and do one. show,” said Buck. “That'd: be it, because it was sup- posed to be a side-thing. It wasn’t a joke, just pursuing a different approach, a different vision.

“At the beginning we said ‘the idea is 50s sci-fi’ — like hur- dling through space in the original Enterprise with analog dials,” he explained. “We did that one record and one show and people loved it. The rest is pretty much history.”

With two guys that can both rhyme and dj with the best in the world, the sound is liable to be unique. That said, I asked Buck how he would describe the group. His answer?

“Well, space-age rastafari- an. And making old cars into space-ships, but its also highly political with a lot of paranoia. We’ll probe into the darker corners of the brain and so on; its also old technology meeting new technolo- gy and ideas.”

Both members have been signed to record deals with a San Francisco based label Anticon.

As Sixtoo explained, “what has happened with Anticon is a col- lective of kids that make, in my opinion, the best shit around —

from all over North America. Most of them have moved

to the Bay and carved out their own niche for themselves, and created a new genre of music. If we can help define a new genre, then I’m defi- nitely down.”

Does the fact that both members have already established themselves as solo artists help or hinder the group? “

I think there’s a happy bal- ance,” said Sixtoo. “I mean, the Sebutones aescetic is different from either Rich’s [Buck 65] solo stuff or my solo stuff. I think its different enough aescetically that we know what goes in the Sebutones pile, what goes in the Buck 65 pile, and what goes in the Sixtoo pile. But at the same time, I think both of us being beat diggers and being producers is the main thing, and I think our best work is contributed to the Sebutones.

“And the fact that we both share these duties [as DJ and MC] makes it easier rather than harder,” added Buck. “I’ve been in situa- tions before where those same fac- tors did make it harder, but I think we share a clear enough vision. It could be disastrous if we clashed over it, but we’re on the same wave length.
