A noticeable featare in connection with the exhibition was the celerity of the news- gatherers and the great promptitude of the press. But this is easily explained by the fact that the press of Halifax is not ouly served by active reporters, but by the {atest inventions in the art of printing. A visit to the cffice of the Halifax Morning Herald and Evening Mail revealed the fact that three linotype machines are in oper- ation there, doing the work of twelve or fifteen compositors, saving the type and enabling the enterprising publixhers to present their papers in a daily new dress, that the cffice is supplied with a complete stereotyping apparatus, and that the press and folder is capable of turning off nine thousand printed and folded papers in an hour. Imagine a machine transforming white papers into copies of The Herald and The Mail at the rate of almost three per second! Tothe modern outfit of the printing office, the wonderful celerity with which reports and news were laid before the thousands in attendance at the exhibi- tion, is largely attributable. The Herald Pablishing Company are to be congratu- lated upon the early results of their enterprise, and we sincerely hope that their faith in the continued growth of the industries and population of Nova Scotia is well founded, As the Garden of the falf and the fruitful souree of food supply for artisans and miners, Prince Edward Island is deeply interested im the develop- ment of the aeighboring Province of Nova Scotia which, with New Brunswick, affords its nearest market.

THE REVOLT IN QUEBEC,

Tne feeling against Sir Wilfrid Laurier in the province of Quebec is spreading. There is evidently a good deal of feeling in that province over the Langelier matter, to which Taz Examiner made reference yesterday, and the outcome will be awaited with interest. Referring to a previous telegram the Quebec correspondent of the Montrea) Star says :

“The news from thie city published in Tharsday’s Star respecting the future Lieutenant-Governorship of this prevince has caused quite alot of talk in political eircles, and was reproduced by all the Conservative papers in this city. A Star correspondent has had occasion to speak tomany prominent Liberals about the matter, and all, without exception, have made uptheir minodsthat if Hon F. Langelier does not get the Ligutenant- Governorship as promised, Sir Wilfrid

Laurier will hear of it.”

The Montreal Witness, which has lately been doing some vigorous protesting against the controlling power of Tarte, intimates that the Laurier Government is losing power there and that the end may be serious. Here is what the Witness says:

LORD AND LADY ABERDEEN COMING TO CHARLOTTETOWN.

Sir Louis Davies last night received a telegram from His Excellency the Gov- ernor Genera! stating that he and the

cluded to pay a visit to Charlottetowa and Summerside next week. Their Excel- leacies will arrive in Pictou by train on Tuesday morning the 12th inst., and cross to Charlouetown in the Dominion Steam Cruiser “Acadia” arriving about | o’clock. In the afternoon of that day Her Excellency the Countess of Alte-deon will address a meting of the ladies of Charlotte:own and Queen’= County in the Legislative Council Chamber on the subject of the Women’s Council of Canada, This is an associa- tion having for its ot ject the improvement of the condition and the advancement of women.

Their Excellencies will probably be the guests of His Honour the Lieutenant- Governor. Sir Louis has forwarded a copy of His Excellency’stelegram to His Honour who had gone to Summerside to attend the exhibition, and till he returns this evening no definite plan can be given of the reception to be accorded the Governor General. Sir Louis also wrote to His Worship the Mayor informing him of the proposed visit of Lord Aberdeen and it is probable that some conclusion will be come to with regard to the form the reception should take in time for the press tomorrow,

—According to the quarterly retien issued by “Lioyd’s Register of Shippiog,” the number of vessels of ail kinds iepurt- ed as totally lost or condemned during the quarter ended March 31 last amounted to 254 of the aggregate tonnage of 212,094 tons. Of this total 31 were abandoned at sea, 7 were burnt, 11 were lest through collision, 6 foundered, 29 are returned as missing, and i23 were wrecked. Eighty two out of this total were steamers, with a total tonnage of 126,197 tons, three of of which were abandoned at sea, gl4 were condemned, 2 were burnt, 5 were lost through collision, 3 foundered, tl are re- ported as missing and 44 wrecked.
