Pror. DeMorGay, the Cambridge mathe- matician, when expostulating against the practice of duelling, was met with the query what he would do if a man called him a liar. His anawer, with its Welsh accents, ran thus: “| should call on him to pruv it ; if he did not prue it, he ought to be ashamed of himself ; if he did, I ought to be ashamed of myself.”
J.oss OF THE Susay.—The brigt. ‘* Susan,” Capt. Daniel Hogan, coal laden, from North Sydney, C. B., for Harbor Grace, N. F., went ashore (as reported in Monday’s Halifax **Herald’’) at the Barrasois, near the north head of Lingan, in a snow storm on Friday night. 13th inst. She is a total wreck. Crew saved. The above named vessel was 140 tons register, built and hails from P. E. Island, and is owned by Mr. Green, of Harbor Grace, N. F. Cargo, hull, sails, rigging, &c., will be sold at public auction for the benefit of all con- cerned. The outfit and advances were insured in Halifax for $750.
At a Special Meeting of St. Patrick’s Total Abstinence Society, held in St. Patrick’s Hall, on Sunday evening, 22nd December, the fol- lowing Preamble and Resolutions were unani- mously adopted :—

Resolved, That the following Preamble and Resolutions be inserted in the Reeords of this Society, and that a copy be presented to the widow and family of the deceased ; and also published in the Dar_y Examrver and Herald newspapers.

The McCarthy Murder.
Another jury has failed to render a de- cision in the McCarthy murder case—one of the most remarkable cases that ever came up for trial in anycountry. On this occasion the prisoners had a larger number of the jury in their favor than on the first occasion. The verdict, or rather the failure to find a verdict, fully illustrates the state of public opinion in the matter. It would not be too much to say that there is a popular theory in the case ; but the differ- ence of opinion as to the value of the testi- mony on which the Crown most relied is certainly fully expressed in the attitude of the jury. It is faint praise to say that the ease has been ably tried on both sides. It ia too bad that the murderers of the man should escape, but better that than that the innocent should suffer. We suppose that the prisoners will eventually all be dis- charged to await the developments of the

Tur New York ‘ Herald” reports that there is an increasing feeling in both Houses that the whole sum which may remain af er all strictly cntitled under the Geneva award are paid shall be returned to Great Britain. The bill referring the claimantstothe Court of Claims is meeting with strong opposition, the exculpated cruiser claimants and war premium people opposing it vigorously. If the bill should reach the Senate, an amend- ment will be offered to remit to Great Britain the unexpended balance. If such

Ortawa, Dec. 21. | _ The stay of Chief Justice Richards in Europe is likely to be indeiinitely prolong- ed, and, as it has been decided that Justice laschereau cannot be sworn in until the Chief Justice is present or a substitute ap- pointed. Itisimprobable that there will be a sitting of the Supreme Court in Janu- ary. In order to relieve the difficulty, one of the earliest acts of the Government on the assembly of Parliament will be the in- troduction of a measure permitting the Ad- ministration of the oath by the Senior Judge of the court in the absence of the Chief Justice. After Judge Taschereau is sworn in, there will be a special sitting, probably in March, 7 At the close of the first session of Purlia- ment, Sir John McDonald will, it is ramor- ed, proceed to England in order to be sworn in as a Privy Councillor, On his re- turn, the retirement of Richards will be an- nounced. It is believed that Sir John will be nominated as his successor.

A correspondent with General Browne reports that the British are on the march from Jellalabad. He repeats the story of the Ameer’s flight in a more positive form.
A special cable says that Gen. Browne occupied Jellalabad yesterday.

The stock of the Toronto Globe is now quot d at 37 per cent. premium, its capit 1 being $500,000. This would make the actual value $685,000. About $100,000 of the stock is owned for other persons than the Messrs. Brown, but it is now said that the Hon. George Brown will part with his stock for half a million and retire from the management. It is probable this sale has been affected already, and the fact may have given rise to the rumors current recently of
a change in the directorate of the paper.
