Advices from Honolula by s:eamer Aus- tralian state that the British man-of-war Espergle returned there Aug. 28, after an absence of aimwonth. She visited Hum- phrey’s Island and Verson Island, and an- nexed them to the British Dominion. The islands are 20 miles apart, and supposed t be on the route of one of the projected Trans-Pacific cables. While at Humphrey's Islands the Esp-rgle took on board twenty men of the British ship Garston, from Sydney to San Francis- co, which was wrecked near Starbuck Islands on July 17th. The ship was ahan- doned. One boat, containing Capt. Pye and eight of the crew, was lost sight of and has not been seen since.

The Searle-O’Connor Race.
Toronto, Sept. 8,
Betting in the city Saturday on the Searle-O’Connor race was spirited. One well-informed sportiag man Talent that at least seven thousand dollars was posted last night. The O’Connor party were offer- ing five to four, with few takers. A cable was received yesterday informing a gentle- man who had sent two thousand dollars to England to back O’Connor that it had been placed at four to six. A syndicate who are anxious to bet their pile on the Toronto man immediately cabled five thousand dol- lars over.to be placed at even or better. O'Connor cabled yesterday that he was in the pink of condition and feels confident of the result.
A Disastrous Fire. New York, Sept. 8. One of the most disastrous fires that ever struck Wiiliamsburyg occurred about 1.30 o'clock on Saturday afternoon in the Mammoth sugar plant of Dick, Meger & Co. The entire establishment, a collection of buildings eight stories high, extending about 400 feet on North 7th Street, 300 feet on North 88th Street, and 250 feet along the East River were reduced to ruins. Within the building were 1,700 barrels of sugar, valued at about half million dollars. The total loss is about $2,000,000. A num- ber of men were injured. The mills ¢m- ployed about 200 hands,
