Inter-Labor Battle

The meeting, seemingly destined to touch on’ Canada's bissest lntra-labor battle in years, came just a. day after the C. S. U. had received s blow in the absorption ca,’ the Canadian Lake Beamerfs Union, its rival on the lakes. bi)’ the powerful A. R. Ln-afliiiated Seafarers’ International Union.

That move put the Congress in the position where it. had to choose between the C. S. U. and a union now sponsored by its own ally. the American Federation of labor.

Frank Hall, vice-president of the Brotherhood of Railway and Steamship Clerks, engineered both the C. L. S. U.-S. I U. mef8ll‘ and today's meeting of dissident union oflicials.

After the session. he told news- paper men that the meeting had taken these stops:

1. Unanimously endorsed the

Seaman's Union merger.

2. Decided to “do everything we can" to heave Communists out of the Congrm and bur from Congress office all Com- munists, Communist sympath- lzers and anyone who plays ball with Communists.

3. Oflnstituteci itself into l permanent organization to bit- tle Communism in the Con- gress and to work for main- tenance of the T.L.C.'s "integ- rlty."

Besides a group of 1b internat- ional rail unions, the organizat- ions represented at the meeting included workers in {the building trades. pulp. paper and suliphi-to. teamsters, building services, hotels and restaurants, metal trades snd shipyard industries.

Hail made it clear they plan- ned to stage a wide-open fight against Communists in the T.L.C. at the annual congress conven- tion opening in Victoria. Oct. 11.

The group plans to meet 1n Victoria again just before the convention to lay final plans for their projected house-cleaning of Reds.

From sea duty Captain Connolly went to King's College. Halifax. for further study and then to HM. C.S. York. Toronto. which he com- manded for several months and where he received his fouithitripe in June. 1945.

At HMCS. York Capt. Connol- ly was known as "the sporting skipper" because of his keen pro- motional interest and participation in various spozts.

In the Spring of 1945 Capt. Con- nolly was appointed t0 corrmond of i-IMCB. Avalon. the Royal Canadian Navy's major shore es- tablishment in Newfoundland. s post he held until his retirement. following a period of leave. in January. 1946.

The market for eggs is stiLl un- settled, Mr. F. M. Nash. poultry products inspector said yesterday in a Dominion Department. of Agriculture egg and poultry mar- ket report. "Paying prices on un- graded eggs in Nova Scotle. and particularly Prince Edward Island are possibly as low as any place in Canada," the report said.
