The Fishery Bounty.

Turoveu the exertions ot Messrs. Fortiv, MeDonald, Hackett, Jenkins and other Maritime M. P’s., supportivg the Government, the boat fishermen, we are glad to learv, are likely to get $20,000 additional bouaty on last year’s catch. The said M. P's. are also endeavoriog to get $30,000 additional for next year. No doubt cur fisherraen will give credit to whom credit is due—when the money | Last year’s bounty should be paid now—without any further delay.

When che Fishery Bounty was first granted by the present Goverament, the Grits declared it was only given as an election bait, aud that as soon as the contest was over, it would be withdrawn. Now, bowever, they find that the Goverument is not only going to continue the grant, but will increase the amount from time to time.

The Patriot, doubtless, still continues to think that the bounty system is a “vicions system.” The more money that is received by our fishermen as bounty, the more * vicious,” according to the organ, is the system. It is eutitled to its epiaions on the subject; but it will be a long time in convincing the men who catch the fish that the sys- tem is vicious. They are well worthy of beiug encouraged in their arduous and hazardous calling, and we sin- cerely hope thet the amecunt annually received by them may be doubled.

It is well known that if, by auy un- fortunate turn of the political wheel, the Grits should again get into power, the bounty would be at once withdrawn. We hope our fishermen will bear this in miod when the proper tite arrives. The present Government is io favor of giving the fishermen their rights. The Grits are not, as readers of the Patriot are well aware.

Another Case.

The Grand Jury of Prince County have iu their wisdom ceusured Mr Sheriff Strong for placing liquor dealers in the lower cells while other persons guilty of ‘heinous crimes ” are allowed to use the upper rooms,— as though theve could be a more heinous! crime than che dispeusivg, ia defiance! of law, and for money, of poison so deadly as that which caused the death of Mrs. Vance, and thousands who have gone hetore her. Whether or not there are degrees ot punishment for the damned, we are not told; but if there are, eternal justice will surely demand} that the modera liquor dealer be con. | signed to the lowest aud hottest pit io hell.

It ought to be a special direction to the Coroner's Jury in this case, to dis- cover if possible who sold the liquor which killed the woman. It is comfort- ing to know and fecl that the community

Well, we know, as a matter of fact, that there wili be a good many hundred names placed upon this new voters’ list that will not have the legal right to vote. Their right to remain on that list will be questioned, and must ve questioned, at the first preliminary revision.”

The truly Liberal members of the House, the Liberal-Conservatives, say that an Iudian who is civilized, and owns pro- perty and behaves himself as well as a white man, should have equal rights aud privileges exiended to him under the law, and we believe that in this they ure right. ‘There should be no national or race distinctions in a country like this, so far as the Franchise is concerned.

A Battleford despatch of the 9th inst. seys Gen. Middleton's force in chase after Big Bear comprises the Mounted Police, Boulton’s horas, the Alberia Rifles, Deanis corps and two gatling guns, To provide for the contingency of Big Bear's breaking eastward, Col Otter has been directed to march his command north to protect the Jack Fish Lake, and Turtle Lake country, while Col. Irvine will proceed by the Green Lake trail te watch all points there.

Another account of Steele’s brush with Big Bear (which has already been reported) says ; Stvele encountered Big Bear’s scouts tem miles this side of Onion Laks, and was fired on by them. When he reached the Indian camp on the shores of the Loke they were retiring toa stronghold on the high woeded island or peninsula in the Lake surrounded by high bauks. Steele followed the Indians, and under a heavy fire from the Island occupied their camp on the shore from which all the warriors had been removed, aud maintained this position for an hour, when he retired, carrying his wounded, viz.: Fury, Fisk and West, on a captured buckboard.

McKay, the interpreter, then had a fruit- less parley with the Ludians about the pri- soners as already stated.

The case of James H. and Douglas Cole vs. the Queen Insucance Company. ‘The plaintiffs reside at Tyne Valley. The action was brought to recover $4,000 oa a policy of insurance, for a loss sustained on their shop and atock of goods, which were destroyed by fire ia April, 1884. The defence is that the plaintiffs overvalued their stock, and claim for a larger amount than the value of the goods actually destroyed. This case will probably last two or three days. Peters, Peters & Stew- art for the plaintiffs, Palmer & MeLeod for the defendants.

The Grand Jury were dismissed on Wednesday morning and thanked by Judge Hensley for their attendance.

True Bills were found against Etlen Duggan for arson, Catherine Dalton for abduction and Joseph Chaisson for forgery ; and the following presentment was made, which the Judge assured the Jury would be laid before the proper authorities :— ‘*We, the Grand Jury for Prince County, bey to report that we have inspected the wards and cells of Prince County Jail and fovni them well kept and clean. We also veg to report that we find the chimneys in the jail do not draw properly, and that the stoves in some of the rooms are in bad order, causing much discomfort and anaoy- ance to the inmates. We also beg to report that we strongly condemn the con- duct of Sheriff Strong as to his disposition of the prisoners confined in the said jail, inasmuch as persons convicted for violation of the Canada Temperance Act, particalarly women, are cenfined in the cells below, while at the same time, a man convicted of a similar offence, as well as a man onddergo- ing aterm of imprisonment for a heinous crime are allowed the use of the npper rooms, tegethor with all the comforts and conveniences that it is possible to allow them. Glacstone’s Defeat. FURDHER PARTICULARS.

The attendance at the opening of the Commons on the 9th inst. was unusually large. A report that the Ministry had re- signed had been circulated pretty thoroughly thronghout the metropolis, and great crowds of people surrounded all en- trances to the parliament buildings. Mem- bers of Commons, before the prayer hour, stood abont the lobbies eagerly discussing the situation. The Cabipet council was convened at noon and was in session until 11.15 o’clock. It is understood the situation was thoroughly discussed and it was de- cided that in view of the defeat, it would be inconsistent for the members of the Cabinet to remain longer in office, and it was resolved that their resignations be tendered the Queen at once. The report of this decision of the Cabinet bas caused a feverish feeling on the Stock Exchange, and Consols have declined 3.16, while Russian securities are a halflower. In the House of Lords the redistribution of seats bill has passed the committee stage.

Gladstone, a few. minutes’ after four o'clock, entered the House of Commons. His appearance wes that of a firm man perfectly undisturbed, He at once proceeded to the speaker’s desk and entered into conversation with Mr. Peel. Duriog this conversation the Premier was evidently io bright spirits, and he was loudly cheered by Radical members of the House When he ‘seated himseif in his usual place his very self-possession seemed to enthuse his followers, and the shamber wasffairly rent with cheer after cheer, and the applause became an ovation. At last Gladstone arose ia deference to the greetings. He said the Cabinet on assembling to-day thought they were under obligation to sub- mit a dutiful communication to the Queen. It would be premature on his part to enter into particulars concerning the nature of that communication just now. He would say, however, that, as on former occasions, afew days must elapse before the result of that communication cou!d be arrived at, so as to be made known to the House. Daring ‘he in erview,G adstone concluded, the House would follow its usual custom in refraining from the transaction of its ordi- nary business, and he would move that the House, on rising, do adjourn until Friday.
