Tue liquor prosecutions on behalf of the Clerk of Licenses of Yarmouth, N. S., was concluded on Friday, and resulted in eighteen convictions and five acquittals; and com- promises were made in six cases. There were twenty-nine suits against ten individuals; six of the number came under bonds to sell no more liquor in the County. Fines and costs amounted to between $609 and $709 dollars. The trials passed off very quietly.

Frepsrick Davy was examined before the Stipendiary Magistrate this forenoon, on the charge of assaulting Joseph McKin- non. McKinnon identified Davy and swore positively that he was the person who committed the assault. Davy produced witnesses with tho intention of §proving an alibi, but failed to do so, and was re-com- mitted to await trial at the next session of the Supreme Court.

THE QUESTION IN THE OUSE OF CoMMONS-— SIR STAFFORD NORTHCOTT'S STATEMENT.

Lonpon, Feb. 13.

Sir Stafford Northcote, in the House of Commons this afternoon, said it was not desirable to either exaggerate or depreciate unduly the severe blow received in South Africa. There exists general admiration for the gallantry of the troops and universal sympathy for the sufferers.

The Cabinet is resolved to repair and wipe out the disaster. The first batch of reinforcements leave before Thursday next. He recommended an abstinence of expres- sion of views upon the disaster until further details were received. The papers iu the case have been already laid on the table, and others will shortly follow ; then it will be possible to state the intended course to provide for expenses.

Northcote, in reply to Mr. Mure (Liberal), member for Renfrewshire, as to whether the reinforcements asked for hy Lord Chelmsford, were withheld, drew at- tention tothe blue book, which set forth Lord Chelmsford’s demands for infantry reinforcements, which he said were the only applications, and which were complied with. ‘Chere was no request for cavalry.

The Admiralty have chartered fifteen steamers to carry troops and supplies to Cape Town. The fleet includes the trans- atlantic steamers Eyypt, France, Spain, Russia, England, China, Olympus. Plymra and City of Paris.

There is a great outery in England about the adulteration of silks. Not only are silk manufacturers charged with having in- vented and carried to great perfection a method of mixing gelatinous and weight- giving substances with the dye, but the presence of jute is often more than sus- pected. Manufacturers and dealers do not deny, in their letters to the newspapers, these imputations, but endeavor to shift the blame from shoulder to shoulder. It is very often so difficult to tell an adulter- ated silk that even experts are fviled.
