Tue Picyic of the members of St. Patrick’s T. A. Society held at Fort Agustus to day was largely attended. At So l-cka. m. the mem. bers of the society, headed by the band, marched through the principal streets of the city to the Ferry Wharf,and embarked for the picnic grounds where they spent a most en- joyable day.

Ar the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court this forenoon Henry Feehan drank and incapable, was fined $1 and costs or 4 days; Patrick Mc(Guigan interferring with, and refusing to assist the police while arresting Joseph Valley, was fined $4 or 20 days; James Downing on complaint of Allen McNeill for endeavoring to take spirituous liquors into the jail, was fined $1.60 or 10 days imprisonment.

PersonaL.—Mr. Schrieber, Chief Engineer of Government Railways in Operation, reached Moncton yesterday morning, and proceeded to Halifax. By same train, from Quebec to River du Loup, the Princess Louise was a passenger, travelling in the Bryd Palace Car, also Lewis Carvell, Esq., Chief Super- intendent Pottinger, Alfred Peters, Esq., and other prominent individuals. Mr. Schrieber will, we understand, pass over the whole line, and endeavour to ascertain the causes of com-

Tue Fairbairn family gave their first enter- tainment im Market Hall, in this city, last evening. A a and very select audience was present. ey are, by every odds, the best Scottish vecalists which have visited this city for many years. Miss Polly and Miss Bessie are charming vocalists; and, by their sweet rendition ot Scottish airs, won the hearty plaudits of teir hearers. Mr. Fair- bairn’s discription of the Scottish Insurrection of 1745 was excellent—a real lecture in itself, interlarded by appropriate eoags composed at the time of the insurrection. The enter- tainment is highly spoken of by all who had the pleasure of being in attendance. Those who were not present last, should not fail to attend, this evening.

THe Chronicle thinks it has discovered ‘‘a great reaction” in Prince Edward Island be- cause the Charlottetown New Hra has given a sort of left-handed slap to Protection. Of course the Chronicle assumes that the New bra is a‘*'fory” paper and a Protectionist sheet, and all the rest of it. Now, the facts are somewhat different. The New Hra has beén on the fence for a long time, and, so far as we know, never supported the new tariff or the policy of Protection. For such epee to doubt the popularity of the Natio olicy _ among the farmers of P. E. Island does not “give much ground of encouragement to ‘the ag-handled policyists,—Hx. Herald.
