Tur Chinese do not seem to be very justly dealt with by New York mobs. A Chinaman yesterday came near being lynched and was fatally shot for attempting to arrest a woman who had robbed him. They could hardly have done werse in San Francisco.

Mr. ArcHiBaALD McKinnon, of Long Creek, West River, had in town, this morn ing, some new potatoes, the seed of which was planted on the 4th May. They were of the ‘early rose’ variety.

Austroc aria 8s-Hwn are having more trouble with the Alabamians whose territory they oc- cupied last year. It looks as if these Eastern people were incapable of keeping in a pacific mood for a year ata time. The crisis has re- sulted in the calling ont of more Austrian troops.

Ir has been discovered that the German Ambassador ha: lately in his possession maps, estimates, and a plan of campaign for a pos- sible war between Germany and Russia. As Russia has several provinces mainly peopled by Germans, which would seem naturally to belong to the \ierman Empire, the discovery of these warlike preparations has excited both alarin and distrust.

Carr. Frep Bornasy, of Khiva renown, has just been married in London to Miss Elizabeth A. F. Hawkins-Whitshed, on! child ef the late Sir St. Vincent Bentinck Hawkins-Whitshed. The Prince of Wales sent a wedding gift of a smoking-room service uf blue and goid enamel, Captain Burnaby’s gift tohis bride wasa tiara of diamonds, which she wore at her bridal.

THE annual examination of the pupils at- tending the Halifax Deaf and Dumb tnstitu- tien was held last week. There are at pre- sent 46 pupils ia the Institution, 22 of whom belong to Nova Scotia, 14 to New Brunswick, 5 to Newfoundland, and 5 to this Province, in the prize list we are pleased to observe the uames of three [sland students? Frank Maut- tart, of Souris; John McNeill, of Crapaud; and Lillie, McVane, of Bothwell.

Tue towns along the lower Mississippi are again threatened with a visit of yellow fever. Another sweep of that dreadful plague through that sweltering region would be an awful calamity for its inhabitants, and a source of terrible danger to all having commu- nication with them. it is to be hoped, how- ever, that the experience won in the last con- flict on the Mississippi with the dreadful pes- tilence will be turned to good account in the struggle with it apparently impending.

We observe by late Halifax papers that the owners of horses or cattle found roaming at large in that city, are summoned before the Stipen- diary Magistrate’s court and tined $2.00, and costs. How is it that horses and cattle are to be seen on the streets in this city—particular- ly in that part of the city leading to and from Connolly's wharf—and the police allow them to roam uadisturbed, even after their attention has been called so the fact. Has the act for preventing horses and cattle running at jarge on the streets and Squares has been re-

SINGULAR SHooTING AcciDENT.--A young gentlemen named Pierre Labouchere, who ar- rived at New York from Amsterdam a few days ago, was found on Monday last in the hallway, near the door of his parlor, in the Brunswick, with a pistol wound in his breast. He died on Thursday from the effects of his wound ; and although the police set up the theory of suicide, the better opinion seems to be that he shot himself by accident. Mr. Lobouchere was highly connected and wealthy, and was a second cousin of the well-known editor of Lendon 7'ruth.

THe annual convention of delegates of the Catholic Total Abstinence Societies of this Province will commence in St. Patrick’s Hall, in this city, to-morrow. The delegates will attend at the Hall at 9 o'clock, a.m.; thence they will proceed to the Cathedral, to assist ata Pontifical High Mass. The sermon on the occasion will be preached by Rev. C. O'Brien, D. D. At 20 clock, p.m., there will be a business meeting in St. Patrick’s Hall, at which delegates wil present, in writing, a short report of the state and standing of their respective socicties. At 6.30 lunch will be

served to the members of the Convention in St. Dunstan's Ateading Room, At 8 o'clock, P-m., there will be an open session of the ‘onvention, with addresses and music.
