THE market to-day was very well attend- ed. Prices were ar follows :—- Butter, fresh, from 24 to 26 cents ; do (tub) from 19 to 20 cents; eggs from 12 to 14 cents; flour, from $5.25 to $8.60 per 100 Ibs.; Oatmeal, from $3 to $3.5 per 100 lbs. ; beef (per qr.) from 6 to 9 cents per lb.; do (small pieces) from 8 to 18 cents per lb.; Mutton, see 7 to 12 cents per lb., and veal from 4 to 7 cents per lb.; Hay from $1 to $1.10 per 100 Lbs.

Mr. Lea stated, a few days ago in the House of Assembly, that he believed the present School Law would, im a few years, greatly increase the population.” He did not point out how this desirable result was to be attained, and we are left in the dark as to the meaning of his expression. The remark is not only original, but a casual ob- server; taking Mr. Lea’s personal appear- ance into consideration, might be tempted to say that it was aboriginal.—S. Progress.

Waxrzinc Her Atmosr to Dearu.—-At the Armenia Sociable in Cooper Hall, Jer- sey City, a,gold medal was offered on Sat- urday night to the most graceful gentleman waltzer. The conditions were that the per- sons competing should dance to right, and keep on the floor at least two hours, stop- ping only to change lady partners. Nich- olas ‘Davis, whose breast is starred with medals* won for endurance and grace in waltzing, had Rosie Murray for a partner. She danced nearly an hour, and being com- pelled to make all evolutions to the right grew faint. Ladies noticed her condition and asked her to sit down. She kept it up, however, until nearly midnight. Then the rnusic ceased, and she fell limp and pale in her partner's arms. She was unconscious for somé time, and next day was in a critic- al condition. The medal was awarded to <ornelius Canfield, who waltzed two hours.

Tux Argus publishes a letter from the Rev. W. W. Perkins, of Colorado, which contains the following remarks with regard to the Capes route :—‘‘When the time I had alloted for my visit had expired, I was greatly disappointed by the Northern Light being ‘‘stuck -in the ice,” for, as a conse- quence, I was unable to bring my family with me, but was forced to turn my face westward alone. There was no way left for me but to cross the Capes in the ice boat. This 1 greatly dreaded, Somehow, i had the idea that this was a very difficult and somewhat perilous undertaking ; but, upon trial, I found it neither one nor the other. On the contrary, I enjoyed the trip immensely. We crossed in less than three hours, and these were hours of real pleasure, rather than hardship, as I had expeeted. It constituted a new and pleasing chapter in my varied experience. The very great kindness of Capt. Muttart and his hardy, active crew, coupled with the excitement of tripping ever fields of ice, gliding through lanes of open water, &c., Xe., rendered the voyage highly enjoyable.

HOUSE OF COMMONS. CASCUMPEC HARBOR was the subject of a discussion on Monday evening. We are told that Mr. Pope made a long speech in advocacy of its improve- ment by the Dominion Government. There is no doabt the Government should have improved Caseumpec Harbor. Had they done so it would have afforded a refuge for many a ship that surely needed it. But the while spending millions else- where—will do nothing. for us, while we continue to be represented by men who have no influence. FREE PASSES

on our Railway were also referred to. It is stated that members ef the Local Govern- ment and other influential gentlemen whose good offices the Dominion Government wish to gainin the coming election, travel by rail free.

Sir Stailord Northcote announced in the Jommons this afternoon that Lord Salis- bury had been appointed Foreign Secre- tary. The Queen’s Message for the calling ont of the reserves was read by the Speaker of the House ; it is as follows: ‘“The present state of public affairs in the East, and the necessity of taking steps for the mainten. ance of peace and the protection of the in- terests of the Empire, have constituted in i the opinion of Her Majesty a cause of great

emergency within the meaning of the acts of Parliament. In that behalf, Her Ma- jesty deems it proper to provide additional means for the public service. Therefore, in pursvance of these acts, Her Majesty has thought it right to communicate to the House of Commons that she is about to di- rect that the reserve force and militia re- serve force, or such part thereof as Her Majesty may think necessery, be forthwith called out for permanent service.”

Sir Statford Northcote, Chancellor of the Exchequer, in reply to a question of Lord Hartington, said that a circular has been sent to the Powers by the British Government, ex- plaining the views of the Government re- garding the present position of affairs,

A St. Petersburg dispatch to the Times says that Derby’s resignation of the office of Foreign Affairs was a complete surprise, and caused an immense sensation in official circles.

Derby says the dispatch is reproached as having misled Russia and England by going as far as he did in a direction which he dis- approved.

The Times’ Vienna dispatch says, in con- sequence of Derby’s resignation and the calling out of the reserves, Austria has ceased her efforts to effect a compromise about the Congress, feeling sure Russia will not yield to England’s demands now, when doing so, would seem somewhat like sub- mitting before a threat.

The Times says that the Admiralty have made an urgent requisition on the contract- ors Who are manufacturing large numbers of picks and shovels at Wolverhampton, and demand to know when they will be ready.
