PANTHER’ SPI PULL OFF SATURDAY SPLIT & SUNDAY SWEEP

The Memo- rial Seahawks of Newfoundland came to town last Saturday to take on the Pan- thers.

The women’s team played first. The game was enter- taining, as it was a low scoring contest with plenty of action. Despite several chances, neither team scored in the first half or for most of the second.

The game’s

lone goal occurred

because of a Panther defensive breakdown at the 90" minute. Memorial’s Meihan Roberts put the ball in the back of the net.

Saturday’s second game was played by the men’s team during heavy rain, thunder and lightning.

The Panther’s first goal came from Ryan O’Connell early in the game. After being roughly knocked down, O’Connell got up

score d a brilliant goal. O’Connell was named player of the game.

Kris McKinnon scored in the second half to give the Panthers a 2- 0 victory over the Seahawks.

Sunday the Pan- ther teams took on the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds. Both men’s and women’s teams won their respective matches.

The

women took to the field first. Captain Lana Birch was able to score in the first half to give UPEI the lead.

UNB came close to evening up the score on several occasions in the second half, but the Panthers held their ground, Panther Kinza Baker scored UPEI’s second goal when she shot from about 25 yards out and netted it in the corner.

McKinnon scored the third and final goal for UPEI.

The week- end’s last game was the men’s match. Ryan O’Connell scored twice to give the Panthers the win. O’Connell scored his second goal after John Vos set up a pass in front of the net.

Although O’Connell commanded the scoreboard the Panthers also had outstanding play from Tommy Craig,

Brodie McMurrer and keeper John Andrew Rousseau. Craig provided exciting play that resulted in numerous scoring chances. McMurrer, playing sweeper, led the defence and made several runs

up field. Keeper John Andrew Rousseau, w ho is playing his first year with the Pan- thers, provided vocal and aggressive play in net.
