It was uncalled for ;it was deliberately untrue. During the prst year, M. Menier has operated through the courts, and the judges have reluctantly had to decide that the settlers who could show no deeds were subject to removal. In the unhappy victims, Rev. Dr. Griffith, chairman of the Methodist distriet of Quebec, has taken a benevolent, humane, and fraternal interest. He sougit to protect them, and aided them when their removal became a necessity. His action has incurred the displeasure of the Parisian millionaire, and thie gentletnan actually sought to have him arrested and transported to Baie St.Paul for trial on

As Ophelia, Mies Effie Hext was charms ing in appearande and acted admirably. Spe showed great ability in the ecene where she appears bereft of reason, and was warmly applauded for ber excellent work. Miss Hext is a clever actress, and promises an exceptional treat in the roles which she wil] assume during the rest of the engagement. Mr. Edouard D’Oize played Hamlet and was thoroughly imbued with thecharecter of the melancholy Dane. His acting was <x- cellent, and his lines were given with all their worth. Miss Beatrix Hamilton played the queen well. Mr. Wm. H. Bokee was exellent as the Lord Chamber- Jain, Polonius reciting the lines of the part admirably. He alse played the first grave digger. Mr. Buffham, as Laertes, was better in“the Jast act, where be did excellent work than in bis earlier ap- pearance. Horatio was well taken through out by Mr. Keefer. Claudius, the king, was also done well by Mr. Cufford. Jozeph Selman played the gbhoet and also the first actor, filling both roles very favorably. The other characters fitted well in making the entire production a thoroughly artistic one, and delighting all admirers of the great poet's werk.— St. Jokn Telegraph.
