One of the interesting settlements the |} writer visited not *long ago is New Ross, in the County of Lunenburg. This settle ment is Gold Lawson’s Lake, and is about twe mites from Kentville

The great necessity of New Ross is a railway; and when the dilficulty of travel- ling over the roads—which are certainly the worst that can be imagined, being al- most a continuous series of large and smal] rocks—is considered, it seems sur- prising that effort has not been made by the Government to have them improved

At New Ross cross there is quitea gt od | settlenient and the whole parish includes 1100 of a population. How it is large a num be rdo not com pe ] the Govern- ment to give them’ better facilities for tra velling, can only be accounted for by the fact that many of them are of German des- | cent and more long-suffering and patient than people of other nationalities.

Mr. Bishop, the mail courier,who travels between K entville, New Ross and Chester, has more than once met w ith seriour ace dents, when trying to make time over the “rocky roads of this route;” and is daily in danger of his life in case any part of his wagon breaks.

Near New Ras Cross is the residence of George Ross Esq., son of Capt. Wm. R Ss, the original founder of the settlement.

The house, tho’ somewhat old-fashioned, is large and comfortable, many interesting relics of the carly of Lunenburg County.

Mr. Ross has charge of the Armory of the Militia Company at New Ross, takes great interest in such matters, having a | son in the North West who took part in the Riel Rebellion, and who was imprison- ed by Dumont for 9 days, being captured bv the half-breeds while on a scouting ex- pedition.

Mr. Ross is still hale and hearty, and his wife and family know well how to entertain their visitors.

Capt.G. H. Winrow, of New Ross, s another of the leading settlement and he has a beautiful resi- lence at Bellevue, near the lake.

Mr. Boylan’s hotel, Lakeside House, is a fine large building, and Place, the residence of Dr. F. C. Lavers son of John Lavers, E=q , of Georgetown, P. E. J., adds considerably to the apycar- ance of the village.

General Herbert, in addressing the meeting, extolled the Martini-Metford rifle, with which the Canadian Militia are about to be armed.
