The iron manufacturers of Pennsylvania think the present depression in their trade is only temporary. Works which in busy times employed 1,800 men and boys, have however, been closed.

A number of lending American breeders ~—a number of whom have not as yet cross- the ** big briny,’ —are contemplating a tour of Great Britain this spring, to conclude with w visit to the semi-centennial celebra- tion to be held by the Royal Agricultural Society in Windsor Great Park early in July.

There is an Indian legend that about 180 years ago all the forests in western Nova Seotia were razed by a great hurricane. Whether true or not, lumbermen cannot find any trees now standing of over that age. Last week an immense oak was felled on the property of M. Davis, of Shelburne County, which was 34 feet diam. at the stump, and 22 inches diam. about 34 feet height. Rings showed 160 years growth.

The yield of gold in Victoria, Australia, for 1888, is ascertained from returns fur- nished by the Mint Customs Department, and Banks, was 636,200 ozs., or 24,783 ozs. more than in 1887. The yield is considered very satisfactory, especially in view of the opinion which obtained to a large extent during the few previous years chat the gold-mining returns were falling off all round. From 1881 to 1887 the yield had been gradually ducreasing till last year, when it showed an improvemenr.

A learned man of Quebec has donea dreadful thing. He has devoted his leisure hours to the preparation of a sort of pun- ater’s vade mecum. Our French press will now for months—nay, ‘‘it may be tor years; it may be forever’’—be given to the calembour and the rebus et hoc genus omne. The means of torture which this holiday- making mathematician has placed at the Cisposal of the tribe of paronomasiac mad- men are practically limitless. Under the letter A” alone (for the arrangement is alphabetical) there is a supply of ear-tor- turing suggestions that make one stand aghast with dread. Vor instance under *‘Atroce,” we have these diabolical hints: **hate rosse, Ross; ah te rosse,” which we recommend to the Gutario Minister of Edu- cation. Atrocious, indeed! And this we consider perfectly scandalous in a book issued under (we say it with all respect) the very nose of the Cardinal! ** Archi- diocesain—archi-idiotees haims, seize, ains, seize, ain, hein! sesin. * °” And then who is to stand such personalties as these : ‘*Avoir-avourent, have, O'Hare, Ware.” Then comes this nightmare: ‘** Asayrien enne—ah si rien, sire hyene, Yeune, Assyre, Aisue, Heyne, haine.” And the book which places all this temptation before the unwary craek is called ‘* Nouve au Dictionnaire Francais, systeme educationel, rimes, consonnances, homonymes, decom- position des mots,” ete.
