A MEETING of the electors of the Third Elec- toral District will be held at McDonald's Corner on the 19th inst., for the purpose of nominating two candidates to represent that District. Judging from the number of aspirants tiow in the District, the candidates will not travel a great distance to get candidates—ten names are mentioned in connection with that constituency.

of Odd Fellows, celebrated their third anni- versary by meeting together with their friends at the ‘‘ Revere House” last night. As usual, the tables were spread in a style worthy of the hostess, and fully sustained the high char- acter this hotel has gained in our midst. When the more bulky portion of the viands were removed the nsnal standard and volun- teer toasts were drank, as customary with Odd Fellows, in cold water. After remaining together a few pleasant hours ‘Our next merry meeting” was proposed and the company parted, fully assured that a most happy even. ing had been spent.

Tue inquest into the Springhill railway col- lision, which occurred on the Intercolonial on the 7th inst., concluded on the 12th. The verdict of the coroner’s jury in the in- quest on the body of Samuel McLeod is es- sentially one of accidental death, and the jury from the evidence produced say that they are of opinion that Mr. E. V. Wark, station mas- ter at Springhill Junction, was guilty of neg- lect of duty in ordering the semaphore to be dropped, and in allowing Cameron’s special to leave the yard, when he had not read the crossing order as received from Moncton for Cameron's train and when, according to his own evidence, itappears that had he read the erder himself, he would not have allowed Cameron to leave until the arrival of No. 12. Also in view of the fact that the conductor and driver of Cameron’s special, both after careful examination, misunderstood the cross ing order and thereby caused collision, the jury strongly recommend that the train orders issued by the train despatchers should be so

Fourth Annual Report of the Directors of the Merchants’ Marine Insurance Company of Prince Edward Isiand.

Your Direetors in submitting the Fourth Annual Report of the business of the Com pany, have to express their regret that the result of the past year’s operations has not been favorable ; and that, notwithstanding the care exercised in the selection of risks, the losses exceed those of any previous year—amounting altogether to $32,433.80 ~—which absorbs the surplus profits carried over froin last year ; and after providing for reinsurance of unexpired policies, shows an encroachment on the paid-up capital of $6,085. ;

As, however, the sum of $9,957.50 has been carried forward to re-iusure outstand- ing risks, and as the heaviest lusses alwavs vceur m the fall and winter seasons, the Directors are hopeful that the losses may be recouped out of the premiums reserved, also from new business during the ensuing year, when looking at our past experi- ence and that of other Marine Under- writers, we may naturally anticipate a more favorable season.

The Marine Insurance business of 1877 hav- ing resulted generally in good profits to in- surers, there has been a good deal of com- petition for business on time policies, and your Directors were compelled to reduce the rates of insurance on s:trh policies, or lose the bnsiness; this, of eourse, has diminished the results.

There were issned during the year 121 policies, the premiums on which amounted to $26,558.23 ; as compared to 147 policies and $23,986.25 premiums the previous year,showing a falling off of 26 policies, and an increase of $2,571.98 in the amount of premiums. There remains in force at this date .37 time policies, assuring $167,250. The cost of re-insurance computed at $9,957.50, before referred to, has been carried forward in premiums account.

Notwithstanding the heavy losses sus- tained during the year, the assets are $13,- 911. 80in excess of our liabilities tothe public. This added to $90,360 subscribed capital not called in affords ample guarantee to in- surers. The prompt settlement of all just claims—many of which have been discount- ed and paid before maturity—ought further to strengthen the position of the Company.

A close analysis of the business transact- ed by the Company from its organization proves that Cargoes have been more profit- able than any other class of risks. This business might be largely increased both on outward and inward cargoes, with the co- operation and influence of shareholders.

Your Directors last year adopted the rule of net insuring any grain laden vessels, un- less sufficiently ballasted and provided with shifting boards from deck te keelson. In order to have a more thorough supervision over vessels and cargoes insured by the Company, your Directors think it would be advisable, in conjunction with the other Offices, to employ a competent Inspector whose services would also be of great value in lecking after wrecks.
