Editorial 11: Racket Ball Against the Drapes

While | feel a little foolish devoting such space and time to the Athletic Department (AD) in the light of the fact that so much else is going on outside the AD (namely that it is becoming SOP around here that the weasels win out over their tigers, it’s a new era at UPEI, the era of watch your back, cover your ass, and don’t have the nerve to be an individual as was witnessed by certain events this week) , | still feel that a philosophical re-organization of the AD is not only important, but mandatory should this university enter the next century with anything but a whimper. | am a graduate of this fine institution and | have the requests for donation letters (still unopened) to prove it. As an alumnus, | feel a sense of embarrass- ment that our hockey team is 2-17, or whatever the number is now. NA CIam CL ecL(UE) CNL MERSIN ATLL TL OTL Tedd LOL UPEI was the occasional sports score. | was most pleased to hear of a Panther victory. Not because | am devoted to the AD, or to the hockey team, but to the place itself. What it meant to me (means to me) is dumbed down a little by an AD that cares less about winning than it does about image. (The desire to win is okay you know, it is not inherently evil or anything). When | returned here and saw the sorry state of the newspaper | resolved to do my best to change (and

shit-eating be dammed). But | cannot skate, and | have an unusually low threshold for pain, so | could be of no personal, direct help to

the AD. Rather than make cynical, impotent attacks, | tried to find a way to flush out the problems, and maybe, just maybe, find some solutions. | know that the exercise is probably like playing racket ball against the curtains, but | truly believe that passion and genuine concern in, ought to net you passion and genuine concern out.
