Former S'side Resident Dies At Charlottetown

-The death occurred at the Prince Edward Island Hospital on Sunday of Louis A. Moore, a for- mer prominent resident of Sum- merside. He was in his 81st year. Mr. Moore had been living in Char- ' ttetown for the past five years. He was only admitted to hospital! on Saturday. Although he had not been in good health his death was unexpected.

The late Mr. Moore was a na- tive .of Charlottetown. a son of the late Colonel F. S. and Mrs. Moore. 'He attended school in Charlottetown and also Prince of Wales College. Prior to World War One he lived in Western Canada and in the Western United states. He returned to the Island to join

4. the army on the outbreak of war

and rose to the rank oi captain as paymester in the 105th Regiment. He went overseas with this regi- ment and served with another unit after the 105th was broken up.

After the war he set up an in- surance Business in Summerside which he retained until his sight and health failed.

Mr. Moore was an active mem- ber of the Canadian Legion while his health permitted and took an active part in other activities. He served for a tipie on the Summer- side Town Council.

He is survived by his wife. the former Jessie Arbuckle of Bum- merslde, and the following sons and daughters: Frederick and A1- iison. Warrant officers in the army, serving at Halifax and Ottawa respectively; Louis in Montreal; Jean, Mrs. Felix 0'Riordon, Madoc, ont.; and Mary, Mrs. Gordon Clare. formerly of Halifax and now on route to live in Victoria. B. C. one sister. Mrs. C. H. Black. Char- lottetown also survives.

The body will be removed from the MacLean Funeral Home in Charlottetown to St. Mary's Angli- can Church in Bummerside for service at 2.00 o'clock. Interment will be in st. Eleanors ceinete ,v.

S'side Boy Slightly Injured

-David Ncoiian, 12-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Noonan while driving his bicycle on Notre Dame street. Summeraide. yesterday af- ternoon was struck by a truck driven by Raymond Claw who was backing his vehicle out of the R. C. M. P. driveway. The boy's bicycle was considerably damaged and he was taken to the Prince County Hospital for examination. It was found that his injuries con- sisted of minor bruises and he was released after the examination re- vealed his injuries were not of s serious nature. -5.

School (1, Mayor Wedge said he had discussed the matter with some of the councillors and felt that neither the councillors nor the School Board had apparently changed their minds on what they felt was necessary. He said he wouldn't want to- go and spend time at a meeting unless the School Board has something new to discuss. as apparently neither side had changed their opinions on the matter. Mayor Wedge indicated that the work of altering the auditorium into classrooms had the approval of the council. and he personally thought that a new auditorium of which all would be proud. would be built next spring.

OTHER BUSINESS

Iibllowing the report of Dr. Hil- lard Clark. chairman of the Water and Sewerage Commission. oi) Progress being made on extensions of water and sewerage, in which he pointed out that building per- mits were being granted for con- struction in areas in which water and sewerage extensions had not been approved. Councillor Mac- Dougall asked if the council would have all building permits approved by the council until such times as the building by-laws can be re- viewed.

Following further discussion a resolution. moved by Counciiloi Donald Lidstone and seconded by Councillor Clark. was approved by which applications for, building permits will be turned over by the building inspector to the police committee for perusal before per- mits are issued.

The council also gave its approv- al to the purchase of a block of electric energy from -the Maritime Electric Co. Ltd. and authorised that an agreement be prepared and submitted to the Town Council for consideration. This action follows a recommendation by consultant electrical and cost accounsni engineer recently employed by the town.

STREET REPORT

Councillor Clarence Steele sub- mitted the street report in the absence of Councillor Andrew Pea-ry from the meeting and tend- ered a resolution approved by the Council authcrizmg the Street De- partment to expend up to 34,000 for the purpose of properly filling the holes and laying a 1 1.2 inch top coat of asphalt. on Harvard Street from Granville Street to the elwmc llsht plant. a distance of Ilwroximately 1,421 feet. and also authorized an expenditure of up to 33-500 for properly filling the holes on Hanover street from Oran. vine to liiuston Streets, and laying a 1 1-2 inch top coat of asphalt.

The street report also showed that new aspiiblt streets are com- pleted on the following 7 streets; Market. Water St. West. Cedar Ave.. Cedar St. North. Poplar Ave” Willow Ave., while those remaining to be finished are Ottawa, Eunam. Calhoun. Russell to Milton Ave.

Summer Street North has been finished in concrete. while Gran- ville street will be paved with con- crete when the sewer work in that area is completed.

P”-Chin! has been done to Central, Beaver, Argyle, Myrtle, Convent. Notre Dame. and North Market Streets. On some of these streets the top coat remains to be Placed, and this will be done within a few days.

All broken asphalt has been hauled on to the clay streets and spread.

Streets covered are West. Park. North Market. sheen, Northumber. mid. Willow. Poplar, Chestnut. Maple. Ottawa. East. Abattoir.

New sidewalks have been laid on Water. Central, Hanover, Alley, Russell and Victoria Road. Central Street has been widened from the new post office to Convent Street by doinggaway with the curb.

Work on the west and acawall has been completed. Broken ce- ment poats have been replaced and the rail painted. The east end sea- wall is being repaired )at the prg- sent time and the rail has been painted.

some repairs to the brick work has been done to the old post office and the town building. The brick chimney at. the old pump house is to be torn down right away and the brick will be used for catch basins on the new storm sewers in such areas as Victoria Road and the Arcona street ex- tensions.

S'side Town Council ilears Rink Questions: Routine Business

Mayor Wedge reported on a meeting between the Council and sup: tatives of the I. B. I. W. Union at the summerside Electric Light Department regarding) -a working contract for the newly formed union.

This matter will be brought up at a later date when advice on the subject has been received from the Town Recorder.

Councillor Lidstone. replying to a request from Councillor Clerk for a progress report on rural electrical extensions. said that the lines have reached the school 'in Darnley and nnectiona on this line are now being made. Work is starting on the line from -Burn's Comer to Kensington. Councillor Lidstone said an extension will be made in North Bedeque from the line to Clark Baker's. Mayor Wedge said they have now gone as far in the Hamilton area as the Public Utilities Board had authorized. He said they have wire on hand to proceed further but have not received authorisation from the Utilities Board.

The announcement was made at the meeting that Mr G. M. Mut- tart has been hired to make a survey of the homes of all cus- tomers of the water and sewerage facilities in the town.

Before the meeting adjourned Mayor Wedge extended an invite- tlon on behalf of the local associa- tion of the Corvimunitv Planning Association, for the Council mem- hers to attend a neon luncheon on Wldav. COMMENDS TREE COMMITTEE Mayor J. D. Stewart felt that past work of the Tree Committee had saved the city a great deal of trouble in the recent storm. He said that since then there had been many requests from citizens to remove blown down trees from private property. He thought as the city was the only agency equipped to do this. they might agree and charge the owners a nominal fee for the service.

Dr. Wendell MacDonald, city Health Officer, said the polio situa- tion had been serious this summer. but. it had been expected in view of the comparatively light years recently. He stated there had been 17 reported cases with two deaths.

Regarding the building of a small home on Worth Avenue where no sewerage is available, he felt an outhcuse such as are used in nearby residences was better than a septic tank as it was not possible for the average home builder to provide sufficient evo- poration space.

.The Maritime Electric Company filed a request with Council that in future all television installations be thoroughly checked by civic cf- ficials to insure their remaining in place in high winds. Many of them came down in the recent storm.

ty. Chief MacArthur is presently in Toronto attending the 1954 con- vention and will be instructed to invito the Chief Constables to come here next year. At the same time Coun. George Rogers said that during July of next year two other conventions would be held. They are the Mari- tin1s,I"ire Fighters Association and the Maritime Fire Chiefs Associa- tion. For this reason he felt it would be fitting to have the Chief Constables here in September.

Tribute to Police Sgt. A. J. Dow- iing was paid in Council when a letter was read from the Depart- ment of Industry and Natural Rs- sourcea expressing the very deep appreciation of the Trade Commis- sioner to Canada from India. Mr. R. R. Saksena, for the unbounded courtesy shown him and his family during a visit here Old Home Week. The Trade Commissioner stated that in all his wide travels he had never before -encountered such unfailing courtesy in any police department as was shown by Sgt. Dowling.

Mayor I-1. E. Barbour presided and councillors Corbett, Burke. Atkinson, Prcfitt and Nicholson were in attendance at the Alber- ton town council meeting last night.

Bills were approved and cor- respondence read. Reporting for the police committee. Councillor Atkinson said a number of ap- plications had been recelved for the position of town policeman and the job was expected to be filled shortly. Two letters from residents protesting the removal of the street light from the corner of field and Dufferlng streets was read by the town clerk.
