Memorial Service

A rnmt impressive event that will live long in‘ the memories of those who gathered at the Wheatley Ri- ver ul- ument was the Memorial Service on Friday Nov. 11th at l1 a. m. Returned men to the number ' cf 30 fell in a short way down the street, marched go the monument under ‘the command of - ‘onel Macteod, Hunter River. Under the chairmanship of Colonel Macleod the service commenced at 10.55 with the singing of "0 God Our Help in Ages Past," which was fol- lowed with the "Cease Fire” call from the bugle and the two minutes silence. ‘rile atmosphere ‘about the large concourse of people was p-‘o- foundly reverent. The years of struggle as recalled came crowding to the mind making one humble and life purposeful. The bugle sounded "Last Post". Prayer was offered by Comrade W. A. Pater- son who besought God's blessing and to direct the noble thoughts to noble living. The bugle sounded “Revellle" and the minds and hearts of the veterans heard in thisjbeautiful call the hope and the promise of a new day dawning and that our dead did not die in vain. Rev. w. A. Paterson then addres- sed the gathering, taking for his subject, "The Graves of the Dead." l-Ie showed how the forests of wooden crosses have been replaced by beautiful white Yorkshire sand- stone. These stand two feet apart in tier rows. Narrow strips planted to flowers take the place of a mound. shrub. Between the headstones and planted strips are widths of clip ped lawn. Rank on rank they were, ‘strips of planted flowers, strips of green lawn, rows of white head- stones. The speaker suggested that the monument at wheatley River was typical of smaller cemeteries that were wisely left by the War Graves Commission where, their presence “did not interfere, with the‘ workaday world. There was‘ some- thing cosy and friendly about" the quieter out of the way nooks that was lacking in the larger cemeter- ies. One of these Emerald gems was situated on a fold of the hillside west, of Vimy. Clear in all its details --wall and little tron gate, the vis- itors hook, the cemetery roster in its weather proof shelter, clipped grass, planted strips, few trees and shrubs. It made one wish that his last resting place was beside a com- rade and a veteran catche himself whispering, “move cver a bit, if you don't mind a comrade creeping in." The speaker wished to impress all those who have relatives "some- where in France" that they can be assured that everything possible has been ‘done to keep these sacred spots in perpetual remembrance. The returned men feel very grate- ful for the beautiful solo "There is no Death" rendered by Mr. Elmer Farneli of Amherst, Nova Scctla. The occasion seemed to enter his soul and gave his singing a notc never heard before, clear, rich, vi- brant, grounding faith, startling hope in the power of God's lovr. The soldiers wreath was laid by Mrs. Doyle and Mrs. McPherson. Rev. Father Macdonald was the second speaker. He inte'prete:l the sacrifice and deeds of yalour of the ordinary soldier. They had ec- complished something permanent because they unstintingly gave themselves to what they consider- ed_a worthy cause. SERIOUS LOSS-The large pot- ato warehouse of Major J. Parker Hooper at Pleasant Grove was com- pletely destroyed by tire about noon last Wednesday. There were up- wards of 2,000 bushels of potato!- and a quantity of bags stored in the building which were also de- stroyed. workmen were engaged cleaning up the warehouse during the forenoon but have no idea of how the fire started.

JUNIOR RED CROSS-The reg- ular meeting of the Junior Red Cross was held by the "Jolly Work- ers” of Mlllcove School on Nov. 4th, with the President in the chair. The minutes of the last meeting were read and adopted. The roll call was answered by giving a cent. Reports were then read by the Con- venor of the Health and Service Committee, showing that the work had been well done since the last meeting. An interesting discussion was taken part in by many of the members as to improvements of this branch of the society. Two new committees were appointed: Press- and Penalty. The pupils de- cided to hold a lottery, the benefits of which were to go to the Junior Red Cross Society. It was also decided to answer next roll call by telling a joke. An enjoyable pro- gramme, which had been prepared by the program commitee, consist- lng of recitatlons. a guessing con- test, and a» story which had been written by one of the membe . The meting was brought to a close by singingthe National Anthem.
