A new fishing industry is abort to be tried in Washington, that of shark tirhing. The liver makes a valuable oil for use by saw mills and machinery plants. A shark weighing 800 to 1,000 pounds would have a liver that would give several gallons of oil. It is understood that an attempt will be made during the summer to test the possibilities of this new departure in fish— ing. Itis said sharks may be taken off Vancouver Island.all the year round. If it proves successful there will bea number of vessel owners to engage im the industry.

While it is hardly to. be said that: the days of such staples as. grey cotton and prints are numbered, yet both are having their places Jargely taken by flannelette, a fabric which, while purely cotton is very suggestive of wool. Messre.. William Park & Son. Ltd. have been manufacturing iton an extensive scale for some time past, and kept busy in filling orders and repeats both for the local markets and for various sections of the dominion.
Fianne'ette lookstike flannel and it.iaa cotton flannel which is as soft as wool to the touch. To give it this woel-like ap- pearance snd feeling and at the same time preserve theetrength of the fabric would seem to require not only perfect machinery but skillfal handiwork. Ip this respect Mesars Parks appear to have all that is needed, for the material is net oaly agree- ab'e to the touch and pleasing to the eye but a test sLows.it to possess great strength and duzability., It is now used for many of the purposes in which grey cotton was formerly employed, in the way of under- clothing, night probes, etc., but it has a much wider rauge of usefulness im the way of dress goods where the favorite material
used to be prints. It is not ‘only well adapted to~ these uses by its strength and Jightness, tut it is made
by Messrs. Parks in such a variety of colors and patierns that it is very aittract- ise totheeye. A maiden ina morning dress of flannelette of a shade suited to her complexion is rather an attractive sight, Eand she is apt to appearto much _ better style of calico germent, Indeed, the uses to which tlannelette is being put in the way of clothing for men, women and children are manifold, for it serves to take the place both of plain cotton and dress goods.
So far as preeent indications go the de- mard for this useful fabric is likely to steadily increase far beyond what are xl- already large proportions. Tbose who try it for the first time are said to like it so well that they must have more of it, and as their neighbors fall into line inthe same way it is easy to see that the Parks railis are likely to be kept busy in this partiewlar line for sometime tocome. Inthe mak- ing Of flannelettes, as with their other pro- ducts, they send out goods that will stand the test of time and use, and will therefore contipue to be in demand ig every quarter to which they have been sens.

Robartson’s Ensilage for Stock.
Protest Papers Served on Sir Charles Tupper.
Orrawa, Aug. 7. Recent experiments in stock feeding have demonstrated conclusively that the best food on which to feed either milch cows or steers for market is Robertson’s ensilage, made of corn, sunflower seeds and beans. Sir Mackenzie Bowell left for Toronto yesterday. He had a chat with Sir Char- les Tupper in refrrence tothe coming session, Sir Mackenzie expects to be in his place in the Upper House, but whether he will lead the Opposition there he has not yet determined. Although Sir Chas. Tupper is very anxious for him to assume that position, Sir Mackenzie’s inclination is to quickly drop out of active politics. Matters are quiet in ministerial circles Sir Richard Cartwright arrived from Kingston yesterday. The Minister of Trade and Commerce has been troubled with rheumatism of lat. Hon. Mr. Paterson left for Owen Sound yester ay. He will accept the Liberal nomination in North Grey. Sir Charles Tupper has been served with protest papers in his election in Cape Breton County.
