Little Change ' Noted In Ice Conditions

Not much change wayobaei-ved yesterday in ice conditions in the Gulf of 5t. Lewrence. a Depart- ment of Transport ice patrol re- ported pftor a 950-m1le aerial sweep over the area. The steamer track was still only about 50 per cent open water from the mouth of the St. Lawrence River to the vicinity of Bird Rock and was blocked by heavier 1c! from there to the ocean.

However. Mr. Angus Brown of Wood Islands. P.E.l.. official ob- server for the Department of Transport. said the ice was break- ing up all the time.

The sealing vessel Mary Hyde. about which some fears were held when she was unreported for a time. was sighted yesterday about. 30 miles south of St. Paul's island in Cabot Strait. The ship was in heavy drift lce but apparently wa. in no danger. However, she was some 30 miles from the seal herd and unable to get in closer oe- cause -of ice.

The Administration and Con- gressional leaders of both old par- ties frankly and publicly accept the conclusion that Communisms’ bloodless conquest in Europe may force the choice between totall- tarian enslavemcnt here or war on a. global scale.

For the first time the Admin- istration and Congress are try- ing to plan a foreign policy that accepts the inevitability of this country becoming involved when world peace is threatened.

How new this role is can be best realized when it is compared with that played in the United States in the two world wars of the present century.

OTTAWA. April I -— (GP) -'1‘he lentil-aloe strong-ore getting a raise in pay, Justice Minister Ilrl annoilnced today.

Aell ranks will get a ‘lb-cente- a-day increase retroactive to Oct. 1. i947. Non-ccmmlssioned officers and constables also will keg a ‘l5- centa-a-day increase in allowances. The boost establishes a basic rate of $3.50 a day for recruits with annual raises to a maximum of $4.26 for constables. Under the new rates a married constable with six years some; will get $6.65 a day- Other rates for married men with similar service are $7.15 for corp- orals, $7.00 for sergeants and $8.15 for staff sergeants.

The annual meeting of the

Prince Edward Island Potato Grow- ers’ Association protested strongly evening against the recent 2i per cent freight increase given Canadian railroads and went on record as requesting that the whole case for the Maritlmes be reviewed.

Mr. W» l-‘b Shaw, Deputy Min- ister of Agriculture, who spoke on the resolution before it was sub- mitted to the meeting for approval, said the imposition of such an in- creased freight rate would be ruin- ous to the farmers of the Pro- vlnce. Such an increase. he said, would mean an additional cost to the people of the Province of ap- proximately a. million dollars.

Mr. Shaw said he was ‘shocked when he learned that. the Board of Transport Commissioners had given so little consideration to the case for-the Maritlmes. The in- crease would msarrthat not only the Island's exports but its im- ports as well would suffer by the increase .

The resolution said that the con- sequence of the freight increase would be to place island farmers at an unfair disadvantage in com- peting against farmers in Central Canada and ~that their "very exis- tence would ba threatened." OTTAWA, April 1 -(OP) -'!‘he Federal Government today public- ly rebuked the Soviet Embassy here for its advertisements calling on Uthuanians in Canada. to regis- ter as Soviet citizens.

The rebuke was ‘administered through an External Affairs De- partment statement ‘regretting’ that the Canadian Govermcnt had not been consulted about the ad- vertisements and disclosing that the Embassy has been asked -to make it clear in future announce- ments that registration would be entirely voluntary. \

it was the second time in five months Soviet representatives here have been reprimanded by the Canadian Government. The last occasion was in November, l9- 47, when the Department gave the Embassy a sharp warning that any “offensive? speeches by‘ Russian diplomats would lead to demands for their "immediate recall."

Today's statement directed at Russia's diplomatic representatives here arose from notices they in- serted in Slavic language newspap- ers.

The advertisements asked Lith- uanians to register as Soviet citi- zens unless they had become nat- uralized Canadians.

The Department said it first learned of the notices after they appeared in print and added:

Child Fatally Burned, 3 Injured

EDMUNZBTON, N. 8.. April 1- fCPl-A slx-months-old child was fatallyburned and three others were sent to hospital today when fire raced through their home at Ste. Anne, .a.bout f8 miles from here.

Victim of the fire was Ronald. Beaulleu. son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed- mond Beaulleu.

The other children. Ella, 5, Maurice, 4. and Lucille, 2, were un- conscious when found in the flam- ing house and were admitted to hospital with minor burns.

Mr. Beaulieu was away working and Mrs. Beaulleu was visiting i neighbor’ when the blaze occurred.

The young victim died shortly after being admitted to hospital here.

Damage to the house was esti- mated at $500 but cause of the outbreak was not known. No in- quest will be held.

FREDERICTON. April I-(CP) —Premier John B. McNair sug- gested in the New Brunswick Lag- islsture today that the Govern- ments of the three Maritime Prov- inces confer "as soon as possible" on the 21 per cent freight rate increase granted Canadian rall- ways.

The conference should be held "to consult together as to further action that may be taken lo pro- tect the ahippers and consumers in these Provinces." he said.
