ir live thousands from the briiiy deep. This great source of wealth. which was allowed tolls dormant so long. is new extensively and successfully prosecuted. Among our fishing fleet arc vessels which. for strength. beauty and accommodation. compare favourably with those of the Great Republic. These vessels are manned by as hardy active and enduring fishermen as overhauled I lino-in itch as fishermen the canutit be surpassed, and therefore their rights should protected.

I would ask. is it right. is it just. for a captain to put to sea on a fishing voyage with between sixteen and twenty men on board end no such a thing as a medicine cIisst. nor medicine of any kind excepting one or two pounds ofsaits? "I remember ariglit. i think the law requires that every vessel should be provided with a medicine chest. and if the law does not require it. the sooner it be amended to that effect the better. The own- ers of vessels in this Island. prosecuting. or intending to prosecute this profitable branch of industry. must abandon everytiiln small. menu and sordid. and use their men as men s iould be used. They should fit out their vessels properly. and give the fishermen cvcry ad— vantage. otherwise they will soon have vessels but no fishermen to go in them. The moat of our young men who go fishing now. have sailed out of Gloucester. Port- land. and other pieces in the neighbouring Republic. where they have been well treated. and if that treatment is denied them here they know full well whither to go.

The want of- proper medicines on board of our fishing vessels is a very great one. and one that should be reme- died immediately. Mauy of our young fishermen have been reduced to a very low and precarious state of health for want of proper medicine. This is no fanciful picture. as there are. unfortunately, instances oflt within my knowledge. It is not an unusual phenomenon to sec some of our fishermen rowing here and there among a duet of Unclclhnt’e well supplied vessels. begging for medicines. It is to be hoped that the law will protect the rights of fishermen. and not leave them at the mercy of somc men who are nothing better than lcmi sharks.

It most certainly misrepresents the views of those who originated and took part in the County Meeting recently held in the Market Hall to consider General ilutler‘s propositions. Our contemporary bases a three-column editorial upon the assumption that those who attended the County Meeting believed that the Legislature and Government of the Colony have the power. without reference to the Imperial Government. to permit American fishermen to fish within three miles of these coasts. for the privilege of admitting our productions into the United States. duty free. and lowering the license fee to 05 per vessel. We do not believe there was one person at the meeting so grossly ignorant as to believe anything of the kind. 0n the contrary. we all know that we cannot prevent the ruauiug at large. within the town of Summersidc. of stray geoee. without first obtaining lIcr Gracious Majesty's permission. nor are we at liberty to restrain itinerant pigs without the same leave. There is no great constitutional question involved in these vagrant pigs and geese going where they have amlnd to; neither is there in General Butler's proposition. as far as we understand It. The only ambiguity about General Butler's Resolution is in connection with the word " pro- ductions.” which may mean manufactured articles as well as the natural productions of the soil, or it may

The American Consul for this Island, General Scnmmon. immediately proceed- ed on board and invited Mr. Butler and friends, to Miss Rankin’s iiotel,whcrn quarters had been prov ldcd for them by the Government of this Island. Besides the members of the Congrcsloiisi Committee. the party on board the Cutter comprises a number ofdistlngiiisbcd American gen- tlemen who take an interest in the Reciprocity question. The names of the gentlemen who form the Committee are : Gen. 1!. 1". Butler. Chairman; the lion. L. P Poland. M. C.. horn Vermont. and the lion. James B. Beck. M. C .. of Kentucky. The lion. L. 1'. Poland was formerly a member of the U. 8. Senate. and a Judge in Vermont. The lion James B. Beck is an able lawyer and an eloquent and distinguished member of the Democratic party. The names of the other gentlemen refch to are : lion. A. ll. Lafiin. M. C.. for New York: Hon. E. ii. Derby, an eminent lawyer and statistician. of Boston; lion B. A. Smith. of Gloucester. From this it will be seen that he speaks quite favorably of the work. He estimates that it can be completed an as to make St. Peter's a safe harbor for vessels of even large tonnage. for the sum of £000. Tiildgpsili'yistc. we believe. is ahigh one. for the reason. that timescale of St. Peter's src so anxious for the improvement ofthelr harbor. that they are willing to subsidize Government old by gratuitous labour. as was the case last winter. when £330 worth of labour was performed for the £300 given by Government. But even if It does coat that nrrieuutdt will be money well- cxpeuded. as must be patent to any one at'aii acquainted with the locality. and with the topography of the North Coast of this island. No argument is needed to prove this. The Government having gone to the trouble and espouse of obtaining Mr. Boyd's services to report on the work. will doubtlesst grant the money required to carry out his suggestions. We have to congratulate th e people of St. Peter's on the prospect of having a safe and commodlous harbor at their disposal from which to ship their surplus productions. and by which their value will be much enhanced. Mr. Littler. the Company's agent. dis. credited the statement of the witness: he thought it was in- possible for any one to go ncar the fire: he asked for the issuance of writs to bring persons who were aboard the train to sipenr before the jury. which was giaiited. Mr. Townscur. and Mr. “one, who Were paswngcrs in the train . testified that at the time. they thought the tirc broke out in the goods van; they were unable to ace a yard ahead. and tilli they left the scene unaware that deaths had occurred.
