Persons of a scrofulous traint are extremely liable to it. {t is not strictly hereditary : although whole | families may be fools enough to contract it.

Among the ancient Latins, according to Pliny, the ‘‘ink itch” was known under the name of ‘‘eacoethes scribendi.” Palliative treatments were used, but with little suc- cess ; but a good hiding was recommended yy them as a radical cure.

Sometimes, even now-a-days, the skin of .n unfortunate laboring with this disease is ; / in this manner; but all authorities on the subject agree, that to be of any efiect it must be a good dressing, and fre- quently applied. Th ia treatment, however, is troublesome, and fre rently attended with expense.

Modern physio!ozists in the further inves- tigations of science, have discovered that this ink itch is not contagious, and, it will in all probability, sooner or later die out of the system ; and a proper regimen ad-

Again; a few old ‘‘cronies” under clas- sical nom de plume’s are continually ham- mering away at “The Ma. yor,” **The Sti- pendiary,” ‘‘reduction of salaries,” ‘‘Econ- omy,” etc.; these are all beautiful illus- trations of the general idiot. THE AFGHAN REVOLT. Lonpon, Sept. 20.

The Indian oflice confirms the reports of an outbreak at Herat on the 5th. Specials state that _the garrison plundered and burned the governor’s house and murdered the comm wading ¢ general, who was a friend

and supporter of the Ameer. The affair throws suspicion upon the loyalty of Ayoob Khan, brother of the Ameer.

The Af ghan tribes occupying Gundamuk threaten Dakika, The Cabul rebels are levy- ing forced loans on the merchants.

| Much eaudeeiaiel is felt about the sa- fety of the British residency at Mandalay, Bu mah.

The Afreedis have signed a fresh agree- ment to ensurd safety to the roads through ‘the Khyber, Kohat and Michni passes.

The Viceroy of India received a letter from the Ameer of Afghanistan, dated 16th, enclosing a report from his brother, Ayoob Khan, about the outbreak of Herat. Three regiments participated in the mutiny. They mutinied because ordered to march to Khaistan, where the disturbance occurred. Ayoob Khan asks to be allowed to resign his command, The Ameer hopes shortly to regain control of affairs, when he will ex- haust his resources and energies in main- taining faith with the British.

Ledechowski, ex-Archbishop of Posen, has been condemmed by a Prussian tribunal to a fine of 2,000 marks or 70 days impris- onment, for excommmnicating unlawfully a Catholic priest who obeyed the May laws. As he is not within Prussian jurisdiction the sentence must be recorded until the Emperor pardons him.

It is understood that Gortschakoff will re- main Chancellor of Russia all his life, but there probably will be an appointment of a vice-chancellor.

Another fight occurred at Philipopolis, between the militia and Mosselmens, and ten persons were killed and ten wotnded.

The Toronto Globe of Saturday contains the following special cablegram, dated Lon- don, Sepi. 19 :—

‘‘A deputation of the Great Western sharehelders had an interview with. the board of directors yesterday, and urged the desirability of fusion with the Grand Trunk. It is understood that the result was a temporary postponement of action in the matter, and that the directors promised. to calla special meeting of shareholders at an early date to discuss the subject.
