OTTAWA (CP) -_ The Bank of Canada Friday dropped the bank rate to 5112 per cent after

June 24 in concert with the gov- ernment's emergency steps to protect the exchange fund.

The move came a few ho after publication of official sta- tistics showing a 216,200,000 gain during August in the coun- try's official holdings of gold and U.S. dollars.

Central bank governor Louis Rasminsky said in a statement that the improvement in the ex- change reserves and the decline in short - term/market interest rates in recent weeks warrant "a moderate reduction in the bank rate from the very high level of six per cent."

The bank rate is the central bank‘s minimum charge on in- frequent loans to the chartered banks—but more than that, is viewed as a leading indicator of interest rates g e n e r ally across Canada.
