Notes of a Naturalist.
The sweetest sougster of our groves is the Hermit Thrush, (T'urdus Pallasii) some- times. called. Ground Rebin. It arrives
about the 20th of April, but is so quiet and |
retired that its presence for some time is seldom noticed. The attentive observer, | however, will hear a low, soft pe-e-k called from some sheltered thicket.
Proceeding cautiously to the spot, he will find the lettle Hermit sitting alone and moodily on the brown leaves of the ground, er on some low spray, seeming to feel its loneliness, its mate having not yet arrived.
[t is much inferior in size to the robin, and also much more delicately built. its colour is a soft, rich brewn on the upper parts, and light-ash, speckled with brewn, on the breast. In ‘colour and appearance it is not unlike the Eurcpean Nightingale, and from the excellence of its song it might be called the nightingale of our land.
Like all good songsters, it has consider- able variety of voice. There is the ** ne-e-k,” already referred to, and the ‘‘chuck,” with which its mate replics, Later in the season, it has a peculiar call, consisting of a repetition of ‘*‘ chuck-a, chuck-a-chuck-a,” begun in a loud tone, and gradually lowering till it dies away ; and. then its unrivalled warble !
In the merry days of June, Hermit Thrashes go a nesting. The nest is built on the ground, generally under a low bush, Five blue eggs, sometimes speckled at one! extremity, are the mother’s treasure and, ‘ solicitude for the two weeks of incubation. | Now, the male is more active, and sings | his best amid the fresh-draped bowers of | ‘the summer woods. ' The song of the Hermit Thrush is nt} lond, and its notes have such a crystal | purity and delicately modulated variety of ; tones, that to hear it to advantage, the | listener must be aided by the most favor- | able circumstances. The Canadian Trade Tariff. (From Public Opinion, (Eng.,) May 6.)
Canapa has lately increased her tariff, not, however, to prohibition, but just to the point ef meeting urgent requirements. The greater capita] and producing power of the United States enabled them to flood her markets with surplus produce at prices which not merely checked, but threatened to destroy, vwaluable branches of trade. This cansed very general depressicn, and which in its turn checked immigration from Evrepe, and caused migration to the States. The present result of the new policy is that existing manufectories are ex- tending, and new ones springing up, immi- gration is increasing, capital is growing in the country itself, end flowing in from witheut for railroads and ether undertak- ings of great importeyce, which are laying
a wide and sound basis for the develop- ‘ment of the resources and power of the
Dominion. Advocates of free trade who have seen Canada underher old and her new policy, and even opponents of the new policy, admit that at present it is working
\very favorably, and whilst they adhere to
the general princip’es of free trade, cannot deny that, sound as they are, there may be exceptions, and that Canada is one.

The Question Settled.
There's no use in arguing the question of the poteney of some substances for especial service in emergencies. They will de all. they promise, aud more, if ae. used, The following from Mr, Murphy. No. 1. Fire Station, Ottawa, Canada, bears upon the point stated above. Mr. Murphy says: I had occasion to use St. Jacobs Oil recently, and must say that it is the best Liniment I ever saw used. I caught cold from getting wet at a tire, and it settled in my shoulder and down my back to my hip, I suffered a great deal from the pain, 1 was advised to try St. Jecobs Oil, I did so, and after the fourth apples I was entirely free from pain, cannot speak too highly of it, aud advise others to use it.
