It is a common occurehcc that too many horses are trained in the same way and get, their habit of quitting from too much overwork between races. When Tommy Murphy took Hattie G, he‘ tolls us that she would stop almost to a walk before reachlnB the wire. Yet under his treatment she won sixteen straight races one year, and in two seasons she won twenty-six out m’ twenty-Kline starts. Shc was never harnessed for five days after hcr race and the fastest work-out between races was in 2.40. The same method of treatment was applied satisfictorily to Directum I.

Mr. W. R. Shaw, Live Stock Su- perintendent, spoke of the promin- ent position that the factory cheese and butter makers were in, to se- cure flrst hand information re- garding the requirements of the farmers oi the district relative to live stock improvement, and sug- gested co-operationwith tbs pro- ducers and Department cf Agricul- ture in the carrying-out oi policies in this direction. The organising oi calf clubs and similar organisa- tions ln factory districts was re- ferred to. Makers were advised to enccu age ,_ ‘rons to attend field days and demonstrations held on the illustration stations where they would be able to see valuable ex- periments conducted in their im- mediate vicinity. The question of cheap feed supply for dairy cattle was dealt with at some length, and the value of peas. oats and vetch- es for green feed, and winter hay, of rnangles turnips and corn was discussed at some length.

A 1 ‘ of questions on var- ieties and the growing of root crops were asked, and information in connection therewith was given. Mr. Shaw suggested the holding of meetings and demonstrations in the factory districts during this summer, and promised full co-op- oration in the way of assistance. The provincial executive to work under the guidance of the Dairy Superintende rt are Messrs Henry MacDonald, C. E. Gamble, Cyril f‘ Irving Thompson and J. Austin Murphy.

A pleasing feature at the close of the course was the presentation to Mr. Morrow and Mr. Brenton of a fountain pen each, Mr. Henry MacDonald delivering the address of appreciation and Mr. Gamble making the presentation. Messrs. Morrow and Bredton feelingly re- plied and assured the boys of their wiliinsncss at all times to be at. their service for the betterment of "l9 dill‘? industry. The Depart- ment oi Agriculture again assumed the cost of return railway fares and 50 per cent of hotel expenses and appreciation was voiced by muse in attendance for such valuable assist- ance.

“I denied the statement at that time and he persisted in it, saying that he had been so informed by Sir Henry Thornton, pnd believed him.

"1 find that Sir Henry ‘Thornton was appointed a Royal Bank dir- ector on December l0, 1939. when the Rt. Hon. Gentieman had still a couple of years to go before he went out of power. Si: Henry was -..-elected. He was re-clected on January 9, 1930, again on January 8, 1931, and again on January 14, 1932. He remained a director until January l2, 1933 and he was not reelected at that time. But he had resigned the r esidcnc of the Canadian National Railways on July 19, 1932, so that he was a dir- ector of the Royal Bank for six months after he had resigned from the Presidency of the Canadian Natbnal Railways.

“May I suggest. without going any further, that this is a complete answer to the Liberal leader that this Government in some way act- ed upon the Royal Bank to make Sir Henry Thornton withdraw from thc directorship of that institu- tion. That in itself is proof enough without anything further although I have a little iurtherprcof if I need it."

Mr. King rose immediately and sa‘d that "Sir Henry Thornton was certainly under the impression- and he so infonned inc-that the reason he was not reappointed to the Board of the Royal Bank was due to the action oi the Dominion Government.

"I assumed at the time," con- tinued Mr. King, "this was because of his also being Presdent of the

road. In that I may have m1s-, understood the significance of his not being retained as a director. This, however, would only make the situation more aggravating; because it would indicate that the; Government was interfering with a. purely private business and the appointment of a. dkector of a private corporation, flit Sir Henry certainly had the impression that the reason he was not reappointed was that the bank had intimated to him that he must resign and the intimation conveyed with it the impression. that the Govern- ment of the day had considered that advisable." -

Dr. Manion said that Mr. KJIICS remarks were "a good deal milder than his observations of last night.“ The opposition leader had said that he believed Sir Henry.

"I shall give the Liberal leader a little further proof that the statement is not true," said the Minister of Railways.

"I have under my hand a. tele- gram from M. W. Wilson. General Manage , and I think Vice-Presi- dent of the Royal Bank. I tele- graphed to him asking about the matter, and this is his reply:

‘Your telegram received. when Sir Henryfrhomton retired from the Canadian National Railways he offered to resign from the board oi.’ this Bank but it was suggested that he allow the matter to stand untl his future plans became more definite. As you are aware he sub- sequently moved to New York, and shortly before our annual mcctin! in January he intimated that, as he was no longer a. resident of Canada he did not wish to offer himself for reelection. His wishes were carried out. At no time was the question of his directorship discusse“ by us with any member of the Government!"

Mr. King asked a question. "MW I ask," he said, “whether the Min- ister cah and will say that Sir Henry Thzrntoufis intimation that he was no to be renominated was not due to a message which was sent by Mr. Wilson h'mself to his Manager in New York who con- veyed lt to Sir Henry, and that when it was conveyed to him, he intlmaiod that under the circum- stances he would not expect to be re-appolnted?"

"I do not known anything about any private message of Mr. Wil- son to Sir Henry Thornton," re- toried Dr. Manion. “I have given a public message from Mr. Wilson t0 the people of Canada. 1 accept Mr. Wilson's word. Furthermore, last night I made the statement—and I repeat it today-that the Gov- ernment had nothing whatevcr to do with Sir Henry Thornton‘: re- tiring from the Board of Directors of the Royal Bank. Moreover, if the Rt. Hon. Gentleman was fair. which he is not. he would accept that statement and withdraw his 0W3.
