French Successes.

Lonpon, Sept. 15.

French accounts of the battle with the Black Flags state that on Sdturday, Sept. 1, the French forces from Hanoi advanced to within twelve miles of Sontay where the

; enemy was found in Casemate fort upon | which the fire of the French had no effect. | After three days hard fighting, the French | troops, aided by a heavy fice from the fleet | under Adiiral Bouvet, carried the enemies works atthe pint of the bayonet, cav- tured two towns and two Black Flag stan- dards. The French loss was two officers and fourteen men killed, and twelve ofticers and forty men wounded. The ‘‘Sair” professes to give the follow- ing as the heads of proposals by the Mar- quis Tzing, Chinese ambassador. To M. Challemel-Lacour, that France shaii cease sending reinforcements to Tonquim, that China will reconsider the treaty here but retain the right of jnvesture of Annamez Sovereigns, that French Pro- tectorate shall be under Chinese control and under the direction of Military Man- darins and that China shall be reimbursed for ell expenses incurred in the repression of the ‘‘Black Flags.” Bi legis

oLustcy on THE IsTEROOLONTAL Ratt- way.—No. 10 express (night train from St, John) ran into a special freight near East Mines station, between Debert and London- derry, three miles east of the latter station, Thursday morning. When the fireman and engineer on each engine discovered that a crash was inevitable they leaped from thelr cabs and escaped with a few bruises. Both engines were wrecked and a number of cars derailed as well as damaged. None of the passengers were hart. A wrecking train was sent out and succeeded in getting the track clear so as to allow the morning express out of Halifax to pass between two and three hours later than its regular time. Admiral Sir Richard Collinson is dead, He commanded the ‘Enterprise’ expedi- tion, which left Plymouth in 1850 in search of Sir Jobn Franklin.

Private advices from Canton state that business has been resumed in that city as before the recent outbreak, Only a few foreign merchants are in trade there, the tea traffic having drifted to other localities. The inhabitants of Canton have the repn- tation of being especially turbulent at all times.

The United States Greeley relief steam- ship ‘‘Yantic” has returned to St. John’s, Newfoundland. Her tidings are lament- able. There is no word from Greeley or party. The ‘‘Proteus” was crushed in a floe of ice at the entrance to Smith’s Sound, July 28th. Captain Pike, crew and scientific party are passengers by the ‘*Vantic.”

The Italian steamship ‘‘Independente,” Captain Pirandello, from Palermo, was driven on shore at Jones’ Inlet, L. I., at 4.30 o’clock Thursday morning, during a fog and high sea. She is loaded with 100 tons of sulphur, and 10,000 boxes of lemons and oranges, and has also 160 passengers and crew on board. The captain thinks shs is in a very dangerous position. The wife and child of the American Consul, at Cadiz, Spain, are on board.

The newspaper Union, organ of the Legi- tinaists, has ceased publication. In a fare- well address it says the paper's mission ended with the death of Count Ohambord. It salutes the Count Paris as head of the house of France, and hopes he will restore to Christians the traditional monarchy. Its cessation implies that the Legitimists wil] not support the Count of Paris unless he claims the throne on absolute clerical principles which is known to be impos- sible.

The effects of the recent storm on Long Island have been disastrous. Considerable wreckage is reported floating in the Sound to-day. Off Greenport and Sag Harbor the wind on Thursday night was almost a hurri- cane. Tho farmers in some counties had their entire winter wheat crop levelled to the ground and ruined. The damage to the crops is estimated at several thousand dol-

A fire, which threatened to be very serious, occurred in the lower part of Chat- ham, on Thursday afternoon. It is sup- posed to have caught from lumber mil! refuse burning. It destroyed two houses belonging to Nicholas Cunningham, one be: longing to the widow of George Leston, and another belonging to the widow of John Stapleton, besides Cunningham’s barn. It also damaged three houses on the opposite side of the street, one belonging to a Mr. Grant of Nova Scotia, and under charge of Angus McWacheren, very badly, one belonging to Margaret Foley and another belonging to Augustus Fleiger, was slightly damaged. Watt, Coughlan, and Harry Brosbreker, tenants of the Grant house, and all the others named, especially those whose houses were totally destroyed, lost about all their effects. Cunningham saved only his horse and wagon. The town steam fire engine was rather slow in getting to work. Had it not been for the station- ary steam fire engine at Snowball’s mill the destruction would have been very great; but it arrested the flames as they were sweeping eastward with both sides Of the street on fire. Cunningham had $600 in- surance; the others uninsured.
