Caitagirone 1s the largest town the Canadians have occupied. It is a rambling mass of dgrejy stone houses, with dirty re t e roffs piled 0n a hill and topped by a esutifui church.

The dirty. dust-choked narrow streets were strewn with concrete and stone rubble. Buildings had been smashed and gutted bv fire and bombs rained down by the R. AF in the Sicilian blitz ahead of the advancing troops.

15 Big Enemy Transports Are Shot ilown

ALLIED HEADQUARTERS IN NORTH AFRICA, July l9 —-(AP)— The United States bomber raid on Rome today cllmaxed a busy week- end for allied fliers who followed up Saturdays unprecedented as- sault on Naples by blasting Axis air ficlcls and communications on Sicily and the Italian mainland and wiping out. fin entire formation of 15 troop-cqrryig junkers-52 trans- Dflrt’. planes.

In swift, powerful stabs yesterday and the previous night, allied squad- rons battered enemy installations at: Rcggio Caiabria, Monte Covino, Rovciia oild Pomiglino on the main- lnnd and Catanla and Randazzo on the isiad, while fighters and fighter bombers continued to play havoc with transport facilities behind the Axis lilies. R.C.A.F. Weliingtons took part in the Saturday night raid on Monte Covinn and Rovclia.

Eighteen enemy planes were de- stroyed in the course of the day's widespread operations, which cost the allies four aircraft.

The 15 junkers-52 transports were shot down by American fighters while on a rescue mission over the Tyrrhcnioil Sea.

After assisting in the rescue of six crew members of all American bomber which crash-landed in the sea. following the Naples raid, the fighters sighted tile German planes off the coast of Sardinia.

They sped i0 thc attack and in a mutter of nlinutes all 15 transport planes, apparently loaded with troops and supplies en route to Sicily. were shot down into the sea.

The rescue was carried out by R. AF. Silnderiond flying boats, which were escorted to the scene, 30 mil-rs off the coast of Itulv, by the ficht- crs. The six fliers had clung tn a dinghy for 18 hours when one of the Sunderlnnds sighted them nnd picked them up.

In an old garage in Grammichele. Lieut, Herb Long of Port Hope. Ont. told me the story of’ the fight around this town Friday.

A reconnaissance patrol of s. tank unit snd been carriers of an in- fsntrv regiment were moving up to tihe town at n fast clip when they ran smack into the enemy.

There was o small force of Ger- man tanks on a lliii one-third of s mile west of the town, and Ger- man infantry of the Herman Cloer- ing division which had fouilht in Tunisia for s while. with Italian infantry in Grammichele itself.

This was the first time Canadians had met Germans in Sicily.

Caught between the devil of Ilitlerism and the deep sea of all-out British-cannulan-American attack, the Italian segment of the ill-starred All!’ is creaking with portents of utter collapse.

It has been patent for days in Rome broadcasts and Italian press comment that only fear of the Nazi ovorlords is hoidinf revolt in Italy in check. Italian propagandists preaching continued 19S stance hold out no victory hope to the war sickened Ita Ian people, only the plea that there is no escape from war even by surrender. German masters would still make Italy a battleground. they assert.

But the moment cannot be far distant when dread of the terrific rolling air barrage of the Allies will outweiglv even fear of Nazi reprissls u on a weakening war ally. That was thelasychology of’ the carefully p nnctl and bombing attack on me.

Its significance lies in the hint it gives that London and Washington see a prospect of early Italian collapse to pave the way for drives from the Sicilian advance base against the continent itself, not at some re- mote time, but soon.

With Sicily swept clear of the foe. the Allied road northwesiward to the coast n1‘ France would begin to open. To the northeast, from foot- hoiils on the Italian mainland boot, the Allies could launch a. drive at

‘the Greek Peninsula and the Balkans.

‘vfllffn Slfiily. the certain advance base for an advance upon Sar- dinia, Corsica and continental France itself. seems ready to fall into Ai- lied hands almost without opposition once the Allies tompietc their drive across the centre of thedsland. That will expedite tllc hour when fl hting French troops from Africa join in the assault. That is likely to be s rictly a French-American affair as far as ground forces are concerned, leaving the Britisll-Cluladian force in eastern Sicily to spearhead the attack on the Italian mainland itself, if that proves necessary.

There are immediate Allied objectives at the lower end of the Italian hoot. however, which could condition the next phase of the fight. Once the toe and heel and the Gulf of Taranto between them were taken by the Allies. Italian forces garrisoning Albania and Greece could be vir- tualiy out ofi’ from contact with Italy by sea. And from the Italian boot heel it would be easy for massed flights of big bombers to reach the Romanian oil fields in sustained and devastating attacks.

Destruction from the air of those Balkan oil sources would strike a more serious blow to the Nazi war effort than any other discernible move thle Allies could make quickly, and the attempt is definitely to be expect- e soon.

ALLIED HEADQUARTERS, NORTH AFRICA. July 19—(CP CABLE)—Axis resistance in Central Sicily crumbled tonight as Canadian and American troops raced down the 10-miie road leading to the vital communications hub of Enna after overrun- ning Caitanissetta and Piazza Armerina.

The British 8th army on the eastern coast was battering at Catania‘s outskirts.

(The Moroccan radio reported that “American and Canadian troops have reached Enna." and radio France at Algiers said aerial reconnaissance had noted the enemy's “general movement of retreat” towards Messina in northeastern Sicily.

(“By road and rail enemy forces are failing back on Messina with heavy and light equipment," radio France said.
