Archibald Forbes begins his second

The land telegraph line on Anticosti, 200 miles long, has been ¢ompleted, and is now in operation.

The Indian depredations in New Mexico still continue unchecked. The authorities seem powerless to prevent them.

A foreign correspondent states that Prince Bismaick has written to Mrs. Garfield an autograph letter in which he begs her to accept his heartfelt sympathy and best wishes for her husband's recey- ery. The German Chancellor, it is known, has always bada strong par iality for Americaus, especially since his stu- dent days, when he became the firm friend of the late Mr. Motley,

He believes that the warmth might "be enjoyable it people lived in houses constructed to keep them warm in winter and cool in summer, and if they conld be induced to pat on cloth- ing adapted to summer heat. The Girl 1 Question.

Do we need more young women in Canada? Some of the good people of England, like Lord Shaftesbury and Miss Rye, are giving a practical auswer in the affirmative by collecting the surplus girls of England, Scotland and Ireland to sead out to Canada ; ; but we fancy that many & wistful maiden ia Toronto, who is anxiously but vainly waiting for some one to propose, will reply with an em- phatic No! Probably the truth in this, asin most other cases, lies between. The cities are overcrowded in many re- spects, aud they are overcrowded with marriageable, but unmarried, young women; while in the newer sections of the country, uotably in Manitoba aud the Northwest, the ery of the hardy pioneers is for wives. The inference is obvious: beforé bringing out more old country girls, let us wait till our own are pro- vided for; aud let our own girls apply the lesson of the situation by making hay and getting husbands while the sun

The same disregard of time is shown in all classes, fram the celored dwellers by the Pond, to the highest Government officers.

A stroll threugh the streets of Char- lottetown on an ordinary working day will prove to anyone that the people have yet te learn that life is meant for work and not for * dawdling.” I have heard it remarked by travelled straugers that they bad never been in a town where there were so many “ loafers.” In the streets of Halifax, of St. John, of Montreal, of Toronto, men walk briskly to their work, and in their places of busi- ness they give an honest attention to honest duty. In the streets of Charlotte- town the people drag their limbs wearily over dust and mud and rotten planks. The young men especially, wear the look of driven sheep; they seem to be too stupid and spiritless to know, or even give a thought to whither they are tend- ing, or what arethe more serious objects of life ; few of them have any tastes, ex- cept for cheap liqnors and vulgar stories, fewer have received more than the merest smatherirg of an education, and fewest of all are those who seem capable of lifting themselves out of the slough of laziness, ignorance, and religious indiff- erence into which they bave fallen. Out- side the hours in which they are forced, for daily bread’s sake, to be at their work, they have no idea of employing their time for any goed or elevated (even though selfish) purpose. They hang around street corners, or around the police station, or around the post office, or they shirk about shops smoking bad c gars, aad worse tobacco, trying to leok like snobs, but hardly rising to that ‘ bad eminesce.”

One cannot help feeling sorry for them. fer, though they are themselves to blame, they are such as their fathers have made them. The class of young mea which is so common in Charlotte- town, whieh includes mest of our clerks, most of our yeunger Government offi- cials, most of our students of law and medicine, mest of our young tradesmen, and most of our apprentices, has vot grown up spontaneously and in the last few years alone. No means of general culture were provided, which would meet the requirements of a new generation. Ina nearly all American and Canedian cities of the same size there are free public libraries, there are muse- ums, picture-galleries, respectable clubs for all sorts of purposes and many other ineans of keeping young men from the vulgarity and vice of street corners. Here, we have nothing of that kind. Our children go ou the streets almost as soon as they can walk; they expend their boyhood there and their early manhood there, and they grow old there. Only those who have heard it can form wy idea of the vileness of the small-tai that forms the ordinary conversation of Charlottetown young men (and mavy old men, too,) among themeelves, and what the pleasures of our young towns- men are we can gather from their lan- guage.

It is time now that places of popular amusement and instruction were provid- here, to counteract the dreadful influen- ces of the street. One cannot, of course, force to go right those who are bound to go wrong, but one can assist those who would go right if they were led. At present one feels that the only safe course for a young man not extraerdivarily stroug-minded is to go away from Char- lottetown to some place where he can, if he wishes, have companions who will not be indifferent to good and evil, and where he will have greater helps to selt- improvement. It is a terrible thing that this is so; but unless some speedy means are taken to excite and direct the ener- gies of our young people the result must be even worse than the social deadness that now exists.
