FREDERJCTON, Jan. 18. -(CP) - After deliberating 38 minutes today. a York circuit court jury acquitted Louis A. McMillan, 68. of a manslaughter charge. He was convicted on a second count - un- lawfully interfering with a dead human body-and sentenced to seven months in jail. less the 52 days he spent awaiting trial.

The charges arose from- the death of John Carters. l0. of Low- or Lincoln. whose body was found in the St. John River here Oct. 31.

The crown contended that the elderly Fredericton laborer killed Charters in the heat of passion aroused by provocation. while the defence contended he had acted in self-defence.

According to statements admit.- ied in evidence and allegedly made to police by McMillan, he struck Charters with a pickaxe handle w-hen the young man threatened to attack him after asking for money. McMillan put the body into the river because he thought his story would not be believed. the statement said.

In passing sentence on the charge of interfering with a body. Mr. Justice G. F. G. Bridges said there had been considerable sym- pathy for the elderly man who apparently had no criminal re- cord.

VICTORIA, B. C.. Jan. 18-(CP) -The slender threads which have held British Columbia's coalition government together for the last year snapped today with ma- chine-gun rapidity.

A grim-faced Premier Johnson strode from a cabinet meeting and announced he- had demanded the resignation of Fin- ance Minister Herbert Anscomb. The Premier is the leader of the Liberal part of the coalition, Mr. Anscomb Progressive Conservative leader and co-chief in the coal- ition. ,

Later. Mr. Anscomb tendered his resignation. The three other Progressive Conservatives in the cabinet resigned with him.

Demands Election

Mr. Anscomb said all Progres- sive Conservative members in the Legislature would sit on the op- position side of the House. He demanded an immediate general election.

The Liberals now hold Z0 seats in the 48-member House against a combined opposition of 22.

Three other members of Legislature were elected straight coalilionists after when the coalition was formed. One of them, Herbert Welch. member from Comox. said he would support Mr. Johnson. There was no indication which side pie other two would take in the row.

Word was received yesterday by officials of the P.E.l. Potato Marketing Board that the Jan- uary estimate of potato storage holdings in the United States is only approximately 97 million bu- shels which is about the lowest January estimate on record.

In reference to this information. the Chnriman of the Marketing Board, Mr. D.A. MacDonald stat- ed last night that we should have no-.v a tendency towards a firmer market. which has been rather sluggish since the imposition of price ceilings in the U.S. was an- nounced several weeks ago.

The imposition of ceilings. which call for a price roll back on most of the American markets, has had a tendency to divert considerable supplies of American potatoes to the Central Canadian market. A major part of this movement has come into Canada by truck. and was then shipped at rail freight rates the same as those paid by Maritime producers.
