Bremen, Aug 14.--The North German Lioyds steamer Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, which sailed from New York on August 7th for Bremev bas made the re- cord passage of any steamer sailing from Sandy Hook to Cherbourg, covering 3,184 knoteis five days, 19 hours and 44 min. utes.

The average speed was 22 7-9 knots per hour.

Raymond C. Archibald Made a Doc.- tor by German College.

The Sackville Post says: Word has just been received that the degree of doctor of philosophy has just been conferred on Raymond C, Archibald a: the University of Strasourg, Germany, Mr. Archibald. bas the honor of being the first English speaking person to receive the degree in mathematicsat this university. Among the requirements for receiving this honor were a thesis, which means original work and research on mathematical lines, or briefly speaking, a ;contribution to the literature of higher mathematics, and a lecture in German before the seminary of the university, besides severe written and Oral examinations. Mr. Archibald was @ most successful studeut at Mt. Al- lison, where at eighteen years of age be tcok the B. A. degree with henore, and at the eame time adiploma for violin. He then spent three years at Harvard Uni- versity, where he took succeseively the degreeof B. A, and M,A.and the poat graduate course, winning at the same time several scholarehips,among them the ‘Thayer scholarship of $300. Two yeare ago Mr. Archiband went to Germany, where he entered the Berlin university for twelve months, continuing his matbemati- cal studies, aod then proceeded to Stras- burg University, where the opportunities of studying in bigber mathematics are «x- ceptionally geod. Onthe staft of this university are the nemes of Reye, Becher and Weber, who have a world-wide repu tation. During these five years Dr. Archibald has pursued his violio course with relentless energy and marked suc. cess. At only twenty- three years ef age Dr. Archibald has won an enviable die- tinction, of which not only his immediate friends, his alma mater but even his countrymen will be proud. On the 6th of September Dr. Archibald assumes head of the violin department at Mount Allison Ladies’ College, which may wel! be con- gratulated on securing the seryfces of a professfr so eminently qualified to fill the responsible position.
