Of Lake Drowning Tragedy

KENDRA; Ont. (GP)-Provincial police Monday recovered the body at the sixth victim of a New Year I drowning tragedy on the Lake 01 the Woods.

Three couples were drowned. when two cars plunged through thin ice in the early hours of New Year's Day. Another.couple sur- vived by fighting their well out of me of the sunken cars and

"The first thing I knew. Mar- garet's father yelled something and we started to go down right away. I told Margaret to open the door quick. she tried and couldn't get it open. Then I leaned across and the two of us opened it.

"By this time the whole car was under water. I tried to pull out Margaret's mother but she didn't budge. The next thing I 1" member I came up and was under the ice." He managed to break it.

As soon as he surfaced, Mr. Kammerer saw his wife appear about eight feet away.

"We got up on the ice some- how. I don't know exactly how we got ashore. The ice was breaking under us nearly all the way."

...!A large crowd attended the first of the Week of Prayer ser- vices which was held in the Church of Christ, Montague last night. The service was conducted and the Scripture read by the pastor of the church, Evangelist K. T. Norris. The Rev. J. M. Fraser of the United Church led in prayer.

The sermon was elivcred by the Rev. D. A. Campbel on the theme "Our Lord Is Able”. based on Dan- iel 3.l7. The speaker streaed the truths that God is able to keep us faithful. that he is able to answer our prayers and that he is able to deliver us from the guilt of sin.

MRS. ERNEST DINGWELL

On December lst. 1054. Mrs. Er- nest Dingwell oi Souris. P. E. I., entered into rest in her 75th year. Born at Bay rtune. Mrs. Ding- wall was Edit Coffin, a daughter of the late Benjamin and Mrs. Coffin. Married in 1907 to Ernest Dingwell they made their home at first in Fortune Bay, moving in 1030 to scurls where the last thirty-four years of her life was spent.

Dingwell was essentially I home-builder, and people of every walk of life will remember her as a hostess of great charm and kindness, and a friend and neigh- bor whosc twinkling smile was never lacking despite a degree of ill- ealth which prevented her for ma y years from going out much. The funeral was held on sat- urday. December 4th from the United Church. Bay Fortune. and was conducted by her pastor. Rev. D. A. Sharpe with interment in the Bay For-tuna Cemetery. The large congregations and the many floral tributes testified to the esx teem in which she was held. The following were the pallbearers: An- drew McDonald. Ciedde Coffin. Reid Underhay. ..The December meeting of the Ladies Guild. of St. James United church. Bcuris, was held at the home of Miss Nora MacLesn with the President. Mrs. A. H. small- man, presiding.

The opened with the 22 members present repeating the i..ord'a prayer in unison.

The Devotional period includ- ed Scripture read by Mrs. W. Mac- Kensie and scripture reading and Prayer by Miss Nora MacLean. A verse of the hymn, "Joy To The World". was sung which. nciuded devotions for the evenings.

The minutes of the November meeting were read and approved and the 'rreasul'er reported a very generous Bank balance to date.

A report from the visiting com- mittee included 3 cards sent during the previous month.

Mrs. J. R. MacI.ean made a mo- tion that 5100 be donated, by the Guild, for the new oil furnace in- stalled in the church. This was seconded by Mrs. A. Wright.

Mrs. S. Gillespie was asked to make arrangements for the usual treat of ice cream for the patients of sourls Hospital on Christmas Day.
