This sting they are fighting to remove. ‘They would have the tratlic made legitimate, They would have it sanctioned and protected by the country’s laws. ‘They would like to take their places in society side by side with those who earn their living hovestly, by giving labor in return for wage, by services that promote the general good. ‘That is the test of the value of any mans services; and from this test they shrink. Of what use, we ask, have liquor sellers ever been to a community? We see the direct pro duet of their work in the disorder and

rowdyism, that nightly disgrace our streets. Now, when the vote of the

lowest rough weighs as much as_ that o the philanthropist, every effort is being

made, by a generous distribution of intoxicants, to swell the ranks of drink ers in order to secure their votes. Young

men, With the same natural capabilities as those who develop into useful and houored citizens, are entrapped by these dealers; their talents are perverted; their appetites are deranged; and they are turned loose upon society as so many possible fiends, utterly untrustworthy, unable to resist their passions, and trained to regard all honorable work as reatrain‘,and license as the only freedom.

The direct result of liquor selling has been evil, and only evil; and licensed evil is evil still. Persistent drinking is a sort of frenzy that seizes men, that quite unmans them, that renders them uvfit for social duty. It makes men upreliable. And wherever there are licensed taverns there will be persistent drinking. And as it cannot be expected that Eiquor sellers will perceive the depth of meaoncss of a business that preys upon men’s weakness, and prospers by their ruin, the only alternative that is left is to crush the traffic out of being.

It is not claimed that the Scott Act has been entirely effective in preventing drunkenness. There has been illicit selling. There have been physicians who have made a living by the sale of certificates, as well as physicians who have scorned thus basely to abuse their office. It is next to impossible to secure the full observance of any law. Our crimival courts exist to mete out justice to breakers of the law. The moment a

law secures a pertect obedience, that '

moment is it ou the level or below the level of public morals. But it is dan- gerous to abandon a legal position at the clamour and rage of deléberate law- breakers.

Of course there have been oppressive laws, against which it was right io agi tate. Law has not always been, what in theory it is—Right as interpreted by the majority. It is upon this that the Scott Act rests. It is not the enactment of a privileged class, but of the majority ofthe voters of the nation. And no selfinterest has shaped their opision. On the contrary it is self-interest per- sonitied that resents their opinion and its expression and operation ia law. Surely it is the purest hypocrisy to de mand the licensing aud free sale of strong intoxicants in the interest of pub- lic sobriety.

Our duty at this moment is clear. The defeat of the Scott Act means the triumph of the cause of intemperance and vice. It means the taunting sneers of those mean specimens of our race — meno who are low enough to appropriate the earnings of laborers in return for filthy poison, and whose moral sense is so small as to think the business respect- able. Let them be taught that it shall not at lerst be lawful.

A TERRIBLE AFFRAY.

On Saturday night, about Ti |Chief of Potice Flynn was taking a man named George McDonald, to his home on | Kent Street. The man was under the in- | fluence of liqnor,but the Marshal succeeded in getting him to his residence. Qna_ their arrival, McDonald made a desperate at

tempt to assault his mother, when Mr. | Flynn told him he would certainly lock lhim up if he made the least offer of

| violence to the old Jady. At this juncture, | oflicer Bradley arrived, and halted to see if he could be of any service to the Chief, McDonald, who had gone into his house, suddenly rushed out, brandishing an_ axe, land aimed a terrible blow at Officer Brad |ley. Chief Flynn, seeing the officers dan yer, rushed forward and grappled Me- | Donald, and as he did so, received the blow intended for Bradley. The axe struck Mr, Flynn just between the temples, ;on top of his head, inflicting a terrible gash. The assailant then turned the blunt pact of the axe and struck the Marshal on the back of the head. Although blinded by the blood, which streamed from the | wound in his forehead, the Chief, in the pluckiest manner, grappled his assailant, and with the assistance of the officer | brought the wretch to the Police Station. |Tbis morning he was brought before the | Stipendiary Magistrate, who remanded | him, and will probably send him up for trial before the Supreme Court, for assault on the Chief of Police while in the execution of his duty.

The Rifle.

The Annual Prize Meeting of the Queen’s County Rifle Association opened at Ken- sington Range on Wednesday last. The number of members competing was some- what larger than usual, and notwithstand- ing the. high winds which prevailed throughout the meeting, the shooting was up tothe average. The better opinion seeins to be that aciual residence in Char- lottetown or Common is necessary tO entitle a person (otherwise qualified) to vote.

Annandale Pier.

The Pier or Wharf at Annandale, Lot 56, has lately been thoroughly repaired. New covering has been put on, which has been carefully spiked, and a large number of strong iron bolts drawn into the old work in order to strengthen it. _ Twenty-one new pieces of square timber, along with two hundred and fifty-two piles closely drawn, and five mooring posts properly placed ,con- stitute the principal part of the work done under the inteilgent and painstaking superintendence of foreman John Howlett.

Annandale, or as it was formerly called,

2| Grand River Wharf, is one of the chief

shipping ports of King’s County. A large / and prosperous business is carried on there especially during spring and fall, by James Johnston, Esq , and by Messrs. McDonald Bros. & Co., and it is important to farmers as well as to others in that vicinity, that this pier should be kept in thorough repair. We are glad, therefore, to hear that it is now in first-class condition for the fall trade; and we hope that our friends, the enemy, will be as ready, im this instance at least, to give credit where credit is due, as they are to discourse upon alleged ruts in the roads and flaws in wharf planks and in bridge crossings—merely for the sake of having a fling at the Local Government.
