The next step was‘to approach the provincial government and larger business houses for funds to put the scheme in operation Out of these preliminary moves grew the Rural Beautification Society and from it has stem med a transformation in the ap pearance of rural Prince Ed- ward Island.

Instead it now involves rural beautifica tion in almost every phase pos- sible from home area landscap— ing to improvements in school grounds. It involves .participa. tion by individual farm'ch and family groups and even com- munities.

With typical modesty C oi. Johnstone recently told a ques- tioner he believed the program has met “with reasonable suc- cess". The rest of The Island thinks it is a tremendous force e has put into motion.

At the same time he remark- ed he hoped “it has sparked more than usu al interest in making people conscious of the potential beauty of their proper- ties and homes", Other Island ers all over the province are firmly convinced he has opened their eyes to a form of culture they had not hitherto suspected.

THE ABOVE IIITHERTO unpublished poem was written nearly 100 years ago by one of the Island‘s best—if forgotten—writers, John Hunter- Duvar, soldier, author, farmer, who settled in Prince County early in the last century and later wrote the narrative poem “De Roberval”.

In 1864 a group of men met In Charlottetown to forge the Con- federation of the provinces of Canada. This year marks the 100th. snnivemary of that meeting and it is with a great. deal of pride that Canadians everywhere look back at a history of

progress and achievement.
