Georgetown and Vicinity.
(Special Correspondence of the Moncton Times. ) GEORGETOWN,
where the writer had the privilege of spend- ing a short time, is situated on the eastern part of the Island. It has a pypulation of about 1,000, is comparatively level, and the streets are wide and kept in good con- dition. The people, who are chiefly of Scotch descent, are very courteous in their manners, and a stranger visiting the place will be favorably impressed with the hospi- tality of the habitants. It is one of the prettiest, if not the prettiest place on the Island, and persons in search of a quiet re- treat, will find a charm about it which IS ALMOST IRRESISTIBLE. 4 The climate is ‘‘ just lovely” during the summer. There are beautiful drives in every direction, and boating and bathing may be indulged in to your heart's content. If a few of the enterprising citizens would build a large hotel, and devise means to at- tract the attention of tourists in that direc- tion, Georgetown would soon become 4 favorite summer resort. Its NATURAL ADVANTAGES.
cannot be surpassed. There are many fine residences in the place, and a few large business houses. Messrs McDonald & Westaway and Hon. D. Gordon have each large brick buildings, both firms having built several large vessels in Georgetown. Mr. Wm. Whitman is the genial postmaster of the place, He has held the position for many years, and is a general favorite of the people.
A large export trade is done here in the fall of the year, the principal articles ex- ported being potatoes, turnips, oats and fish, McDonald & Westaway, Hon. D. Gordon and A. A. McDonald & Bros. are the firms doing the

The latter firm also deal largely in the ex- portation of lobsters. Lobster fishing has been nearly a failure this season, the fisher- men finding it hard to get the size required by law. The opinion is pretty generally expressed in Georgetown that the Govern- ment ought to pass a law forbidding lobster fishing for a year or two.
Mr. L. A. Wilmot, who is well known in Moncton and vicinity, having lived here several years, is a resident of Georgetown. Last season Mr. Wilmot built a handsome building at Mortague Bridge,?about five miles from Georgetown, up the Montague river. The building, which is built of brick, with stone trimmings, is’ used for post office and custom house, and is an or- nament to the place. This season Mr. Wilmot is engaged in building a
NEW COURT HOUSE in Georgetown and a Roman Catholic church at Sturgeon, a place about 6 miles from Georgetown on the opposite side of the river. The new court house is situated on a beautiful square in the centre of the ;town, and when completed will be the /most expensive and durable building in ,Georgetown. Length of whole building will be 98 feet and width of maiu bailding 45 feet. It is constructed of WALLACE AND DOMESTIC STONE
with Wallace stone trimmings throughout. The basement, which will be used for the heating Apparatus, etc., is composed en- | tirely of Wallace stone, which is harder and ‘and lighter in color than the domestic stone. The main building will be 14 stories high, with two wings, 24 stories high. Main building to be used tor court room, and the two wings for judges’ and lawyers’ offices, etc., the upper part of wing being the caretaker’s apartments. The whole building is to be covered with a slate roof, and will be neatly finished on the inside. The contrast between the Wallace and domestic stone gives the build- ing a very handsome appearance. There will be heavy arched doors and windows. Cost about $9,000. Mr. W. C. Harris, of Charlottetown, is the architect.
THE STURGEON CHURCH
is also built of domestic stone, with Wal- lace stone trimmings. The front end ele- vation is 56 feet long, with a gable 1un- ning up, 49 feet, with stone cross on top, 5 feet height. The spire will be 87 feet long, 55 feet to be constructed of stone. The balance of wood, with cross on top. The extreme length of the building will be 102 feet with sacristy 20x30 feet. The sides will be of ordinazy height, with gothic arch door frames of stone, with carved capitals, which will be beautifully relieved by Wallace stone trimmings. | Windows to be filled with lead quarry. Cathedral tinted glass. The building, when completed, will COST IN THE VICINITY OF $12,000
Mr. Harris is also architect of this build- ing. The church is beautifully situated near the main road, and will be the most expensive church outside the city of Char- lottetown. Rev. William Phelan is pastor of the church, and it was mainly through his untiring zeal that the beautiful church referred to is being built. The writer had the pleasure of several profitable conversa- tions with the rev. gentleman, and his kindness will not soon be forgotten.
Mr. Wilmot expects to have both build- ings covered in six weeks time and all com- pleted early in the fall.

On Friday as a young lad about 15 years of age was driving some cows in a field at Upper Stewiacke, he saw a young bear's cub, which upon be ng chased ran up a tree, where it was discovered another young bruin was roosting. About this time the old bear put in a defence, making things lively for the boy in a square- heei-and toe match. The lad, seeing the bear was the fastest stepper,plackily turned on her, when she ran back to her cubs. The boy went for a gun, but on his .eturn: old bruin nad departed, leaving one of the cubs, which was captured and killed.-Hfx. Chronicle.

A Double Query.

Str,—Is it not time, yea, high time that the patrons of the liquor-dealers, who con- template “a repeal of the Canada Temper- ance Act, 1878, were giving this community some ideas as to what they propose subse- quenting for it, if it be that they intend carry- ing out their object? People of such dignitied position as some of them appear to be, ought to have the courage of their convictions, and speak cut. This is no time for them standing aloof when principles are at stake, and for which they contend. Where are their expon- ents of a high-license programme, or the bene- fits of a license of any kind? Surely, it is not the lack of funds that deter them trom open- ing the campaign,nor can it be that they have no desire tu enlighten their fellow citizens on a subject on which they expect them to vote. Come, gentlemen, in favor of the continuance of the bar-room policy, stir yourselves and let us know how many of you occupy the position of those presented in the query presented in the columns of Tue EXaMIner on the evening of the 24th inst., the class who have to trudge through the mire on the occasion of a demon- stration. How long does it take you to muster your forces for the fight in which you are to engage ?

A Fearfal Riot.
A fearful riot took place on the 21st inst., at Glen Lyon, Pennsylvania, five wniles from Nanticoke, in which more than three hundred miners were engaged. The place is occupied solely by the breakers of the Susquehanna Coal Company.. The combatants were composed of men of all nationalities. It seems thet it has been the custom of several Hungarian and Polish merchants of Nanticoke to send peddlers to Glen Lyon to supply certain boarding- house keepers. The Susquehanna Coal Company always selects Saturday for pay day. However, for the first time, they paid their men at Glen Lyon and Morgan- town on Sunday, which day has always been chosen by the merchants to make their collections. The Rev. Mr. Taggart, of Glen Lyon, has frequently preached against what he caJled such a desecration of the Sabbath and he finally determined to put a stop to it if possible. So he organized a posse of his church members for that purpose. The men got wind of it and made up their minds to resist any overtures of the kind. The collectors made their ap- pearance as usual and the natural excite- ment of the moment was augmented by a universal indulgence in beer and whiskey. As the day advanced the church men be- came alarmed at the situation, and kept themselves in hiding. The feeling of antagonism was so intense, however, that it finally culminated in a free fight between men of opposite nationalities. Mad with drink, it was not long before hundreds of men were furiously engaged in a battle, with sticks, stones and clubs for weapons. The riot lasted for half an hour, and many men were struck down on all sides. Dozens were carried away upon*improvised stretch- ers, with cracked and bleeding heads, to their homes. The riot ceased only when its participants were too few to carry it on, and the wounded requiring the attention of many, who did not return after they had left the field. It is reported that more than sixty of the rioters were seriously hurt, many of them fatally. The town isina fever of wild excitement.

Origin of the House o
f Tudor.
Owen Tudor, of Penmynydd was the son of the fourth son of the old knight of Penmy- nydd, who had served in the wars under the Black Prince. Owen's father had the misfor- tune to kill a man, an accident then common enough ; but the manslayer being in the ser- vice of the bishop of Bangor more was made of it than usual, and he took refuge in Kng- land. In _ exile the son Owen was born, and he grew up to be a handsome and engaging young man—‘‘a beautiful person, garnished with manye godlye gyftes.”” He was no longer very young, however, when he won the favor of the young widowed queen—-the daughter of the House of Valois—who had brought to her late husband no less a dower than the royal crown of France. But the queen had the warm and impulsive character of her family, and falling in love with her young syuire she
married him, to the great scandal and indig- nation of the court. After a married life of nine years, durin
which she bore three sons, the queen died, an then Owen's tribulations began. He was clapped into Newgate and there served a long imprisonment ; was hunted here and there, and finally retired into his native country, a pensioner upon the bounty of his sons. He was an old man when the War of the Roses began, but he buckled on his armor with the rest and fought for that house of Lancaster with which his son was by marriage nearly connected ; and there could only have been scanty white locks about his head when it was struck off at Hereford after the battle of Mor- timer’s Cress. But this grandson became a king of England as Henry XII, and the direct descendants of the Welsh squireen were the naughtiest, most absolute of mon- archs, who ruled England as if they had sad- deled and bridled her.
