This contribution how- r-irr falls short of the total which the one cent levy would produce and accordingly our dairy con- .-:-rns will give consideration at the annual meeting of the As- mriation in March to the possi- mliiy of the island adopting the tuna set-aside.

Early in January we had the opportunity of discussing beef pro- ductlon with an Alberta rancher who runs some 600 head on 12.000 acres of land. In relation to the number of cattle involved this ra.ncher's expense for labor and buildings would be no greater than that of an Island farmer crrrying from 40-60 head.

Two men were employed on the ranch in addition to the owner and the only stabling provided was a cheap barn for the calves. This rancher remarked that if cattle prices went no lower that he was in a good sound position and could operate at a profit.

Certainly the beef business looks different to our Alberta friend than it does to the island fcrmer on a limited acreage and faced with a long housing period and stall feeding in expensive buildings.

On an acreage basis, the ranch- er's returns are quite low-pos- szbly not much over 83. In this Province, many livestock farmers will be producing to the value of

In general, the topics discussed deal with social and economic problems and while many of them are of real im- portsnce to the industry. yet they are fairly deep and involved and for this reason do not stimulate or hold the interest of many Forum members. ,

Farm Forum has been referred to as the farmer's university of the air, possibly the emphasis should not he on university. but rather on the elementary school irica.

Farmer's Co-operatives

Ezra Taft Benson. United State: Secretary of Agriculture, in a re- cent statement gave expression to the following thoughts.

"Farmer Co-operatives now are accepted as an important part of our free enterprise system. Few Americana, today. deny the right of farmers to organize for the purpose of marketing their pro- ducts, purchasing farm supplies. or obtaining for themselves es- sential business services. Equally few. I believe, would dispute the obligation of the Department to give the same quality of research and service assistance to farmers' organizations as it does to farm- era' production practices. Certain- ly the results can be equally valuabie."p

Organisation Financing

The financing of a farm organ- lzation on a voluntary basis pre- some some real difficulties and it is perhaps not to be wondered at that the Saskatchewan Farmers' Union is looking around for an in- direct solution of the problem in the form of a generally applied tax. Certainly adequate funds are necessary but there is a danger in making the method of collee- tlori too on and too painless. The voluntary system compela.the organization to keep on its toes and to justify its existence in the minds of the members. ,

Compulsory membership will in many instances result in a per- centage of unwilling or disinter- ested members. Certainly an un- willing member is no asset to any organlution. in fact he may even be a liability.

Major Mau Mau Raid Defeated

NAIROBI. Kenya, (Reuters) Security forces Wednesday beat back a major Mau Mau terrorist raid and killed possibly 50 members of the nnti-white terrorist cult.

The raid began when about 50 terrorists, armed with automatic; and sub - machine-guns, attacked Thiks Golf Club, 5 miles north- east of here. They tied up the no- gro barman, then backed him to pieces with hcsvy bush knives.

The gang then ambushed a nearby screening team and shut and slashed a native headman to death.

Strange But True

Winter church going in grand. mats day was not what it is in our time. The place of worship had drafty windows and doors, and plastered walls inside. It was cold and dreary inside and out. No window blinds were in evidence to keep out the hot summer sun and when old Sol moved around the church the congregation moved a- bout in their pews to escape from its burning rays. The wlnrters were very severe; the thermomet n of- ten fell to 1) degrees or more be-I low zero, and great snow drifts: often had to be fought to midi from the meeting house. There was no fireplace or furnace, or stove. To this arctic cold the con- gregation were exposed for about two hours as the prayers and psalms and reading of the holy scriptures occupied most of this time. The women folk took along foot stoves which they frequently. had to surrender to the youngl fry to keep their feet from freez-' ing. But the trips to and from the church were very comfortable. as the slelgbs were provided with heavy buffalo skins. om often wonders how our forefathers could be so devotional under such con- ditions ans-I how the minister could hold forth by the hour in a church that was almost as cold inside as it was without?

The church of those days often served for important meetings and elections. Often it was defiled with tobacco juice and deeacmted by political fights. Often its rafters re-echoed with hearty laughter when some fellow who had glean- ed a bit of money more than his
