He will know better before he is much older, and if he doesn’t know bet- ter now, his want of knowledge is anything but creditable to himself, in the face of the fact that throughout his district a series of meetings has been held at which resolu- tions were passed calling upon the Govern- ment to acknowledge the right of western Prince Co. to the County Fair every other year. These resolutions, and the petitions accompanying them, are now in the Pre- mier’s desk in Parliament and Mr. Me- Lellan knows it. One of these meetings— a large and enthusiastic gathering of farmers —was held at hjs,yery door, which asked, in the plainest terms, for a Western Fair. Still he, their representative, forsooth, stands up and says they don’t know what they are talking about; they really want to go to Charlottetown. He must know that few, if any, of them could go there at all unless these visits to the capital, like his own, were paid out of the public purse. And while Mr. McLellan talks without a know- ledge of the facts, Mr. Matheson is mute, aud the interests of the farmers they repre- isent are sacrificed. Pretty pair, indeed ! | But there certainly will be a great awaken- ‘ing; and, in the meantime, although some- ‘what disgusted, the people of western Prince County will prepare to do valiant ‘battle for their rights, full of faith in the ‘claim they put forth, and hope in their ultimate realization.

The Minister of Marine has ordered an investigation into the complaints relative to the management of the St. John Marine Hospital.

Direct taxation is to be the recuurse of ‘the free trade Ministry in New South Wales,. to provide for the deficit in the revenue. That is the commercial union policy also, and the farmers do not forget ithe fact either.

The Siamese princes are visiting England about a concession for a railway to be con- ‘structed at a cost of five million pounds,

through Siam to Yuman. The scheme is | being jealously watched by France and Ger- ‘many. | The Indian observer has it that a good ‘maple sugar season is invariably followed by a good harvest time. This, therefore, should be a bad year for Canadian Liberal- ism. The maple sugar season has been away ahead of the average; and Liberal theories never flourish in the midst of teem- ing granaries. HALIFAX PRICES.

Says the Halifax Chronicle: There was a considerabie fall during the past week on all grades of flours except choice pastry, the present quotations on other grades showing a reduction ot from 10 cents to 2¢ cents pe barrel. Cornmeal fell 10 to 20 cents a barrel, and oatmeal and rolled oats are selling at prices 20 and 25 cents a barrel lower that a week ago. The grain markets are reported to be unsettled and dull. P. K. Island oats have gone down two cents per bushel, and Island potatoes five cents a bushel.

Sucar.—Says the Halifax Herald: For the past month the price of sugar has been steadily advancing, and within the past few days the Halifax refinery 1s said to have advanced the price a cent and an eighth per lb. The crop in Cuba and other islands is 40 or 50 per cent. below the average yield, the cane not having ripened proper- ly. The Redpath Refinery, Montreal, is said to have used up all its stock, and is! now shut down, refusing to sell the manu- | factured product in anticipation of a still | further rise in prices. The Halifax refin- ery is running and refining sugar purchased betore the rise. MEASLES AND THE TEMPERANCE SprriT.— A Nova Scotia rural paper says : The mea- sles have raged to such ar extent in Mid- dieton this winter, that it has beena struggle to keep up the temperance spirit. But now the crisis is past, and we are weekly gaining in numbers and enthusiasm. A week or two ago, amongst other items on the programme for the evening, was a paper on the effect of measles on the mind and mind on the measles.

He 1s Wise Now.—Two strangers visit- ed Daniel Keller, a well-known farmer of Shamokin, Pa., one day last week, and, after proposing to purchase his farm, en- gaged the old man in a game of cards. Keller became interested, and put up $4,500 as stakes. The money was seized by the stranger, and Keller was covered with a revolver, while they moved off, One of them had represented himself as a son of an old friend of Keller's.

An Insane Act.—The Halifax Herald says: Among the steerage passengers on the S. 8S. Sarnia from Liverpool, was a single man named George Williams, 48 years of age, booked for Quebec. He came on deck at seven o'clock last Thursday morning, threw his hat and coat on the deck, sprang on the rail of the steamer and deliberately jumped into the ocean, It was quite rough at the time, but the steamer was stopped and a boat launched. No trace, however, was found of the un- fortunate fellow.

Tae Wipow Gor Damacrs.—An inter- esting case under the Civil Damage Act was decided in the County Court at St. Albans, Vt., one day last week. The plaintiff, a widow named Richards, brought suit to recover for the death of her hus- band several years ago, while intoxicated, on the ground that defendant, Moore, who keeps a hotel at East Berkshire, had sold him liquor, the drinking of which brought about the accident which resulted in Rich- ards’ death.
