MEETINGS IN QUEEN’S.

At Hope River yesterday afternoon the meeting was well attecded. It was addressed by Dr. Jenkins, Mr. Davies, Mr. Stewart and Dr. McNeill. Dr. McNeill delivered a very powerful speech on behalf of branch railways and the candidature of Dr. Jen- kins. Great enthusiasm was shown by the Liberal-Conservative-, and Dr. Jenkins will cbiain a heavy vote in this part of the district.

A meeting was held at Grandville last evening, addresse! by Mr. Davies, De. Jenkins, Dr McNeill and A. B. Warbur- ton. It is stated that Dr. McNeill exposed the neglect and inattention of Mr. Davies as arepresentitive in grand style, meta- phorically “cearing him to pieces.” Great interest wa3 shown in the branch railway policy of the Government, and it is believ- ed that D-. Jenkins’ support at the elec tion wili be considerab y increased.

Last night the Hon. D. Ferguson ad

dressed the electors of Rustico in the inter- est of the Conservative candidate, Mr. Alexander Martin. Notwithstanding the unfavorable weather a goodly number at- tended. Mr. Ferguson spoke for two hour-, discussing the branch railway-, the Man- toba school question and the trade ques- tion. He showed that the Government policy was to build the branches, includ

ing One to Rustico, and pointed out that Sir Charles Tupper had unequivocally pro- mised to build the proposed branches in P. BE. Island, while the grit candidates only give a halt-bearted support to the Belfast branch, and refused to even discuss the others. No promise from Laurier could put the branch railways as safe if the grits get into power as they are with Sir Charles as Premier, because Mr. Lanrier canno: speak for his party, while Sir Charles points to the resolution of Jast session, which was agreed to by the entire Govern- ment, Besides, the grit policy has always been that cf hostility to the construction of railways, while the Conservatives, in building the P. E Island branches, are only carrying furward the policy on which they have acted since confederation. Mr. Ferguson concluded by making a strong appeal to the electors of Rustico to vote for Mr. Martin, the able and honest advocate of the Rustico Railway. it is plain that it will not be hard to count al] the votes Mr. Wel-h will ;zet in Rustico.

A correspondent reports that a large meeting of the electors of East Queen’- was held in G'en William Hall on the 3rd inst, Rolert Whiteway, Esq., occupied the chair. A. Martin, M-q, was the first speaker. He gave a minute and lucid uiatement of the financial affairs of the Dominion, makin: con pa‘isons under Grit and L:beral—Conservauive rule, which were decided y in favor of the latter. He briefly reviewed the National Policy, show- ing its many advantages tothe couutry. fle also discussed the Manitoba school and branch railwayquetions, He read a letter from Hon. Mr. Haggart, Minister of Railways, which definitely stated that the matter of branch railways for P. E Island wonlk be attended to at the next session of the Federal Parliament.

Mr. Welsh was the next speaker. He wished to take much credit to himself for voting against the Chignecto ship railway, which he declared was a standing disgrace to Canada. He forgot to state that his beloved Jeader—Mr. Davies—was one of those who voted in opposition to him, He was forced to admit tuat the Liberal party used their influence to prevent the passing of the supp!ement- ary estimates last Session D. A. McKin- nop, Esq, M. P. P., Jas. Clow, Esq., ex v. P. P., D. Crawford, E-q., and a num- ber of the Libera!-Conservative electors also addressed the meeting.

It is evident that the contest proved too hot for Commodore Welsh, for he retreat- ed rather hastily some hours before the close of the meeting, Strrounded by a small bodyguard of Grit followers. It is

About 275 of the electors of Cardigan Bridge and surrounding districts assem- bled in Cardigan Hall on last Monday evening to hear the candidates for Federal honors, as well as other politicians, discuss the questions of the hour. The meeting was called to order by appointing Mr. John McCormac chairman, and GJ, McCormack secretary. The meeting was id lressed by De. Mclatyre, Mr. A. C. Me- Conald, Dr. Robertson, Mr. Cyrus Shaw and Mr. J.G. Scrimgeour. We regret that Tue Examiner’s space of to-day will not amit of the secretary’s lengthy report.

Telephonic advices report that a fairly large meetiog was held at Montag: e Bridge last evening, notwithstanding tle rain. There were no new features in ibe discussion, which was carried on ‘y Messrs. A.C. McDonald and Cyrus Shiw on behalf of the Government The speeches of these gentlemen were received with round after round of applause, show. ing the sympathy ofthe meeting to be largely with them.

The best of order prevailed throughout the evening. 2+e+e THE TRADE QUESTION, Sir,—Merchants and farmers should give this matter very serious considera- tion from another standpoint. We have an Island capable of raising large quantit e+ of produce and more pasture for cattle, sheep, horses, &c., and extend ng the dairy and cheese industries, dead meat. &e,&e. This could largely be developed by an oceao steamer from England making this a port of call to Montreal or Halifax, and another from the West Indies, which pow only calls at Halifax ani St. John When the Dominion Government is call- ing fur ten-lers to subsidize these routes, by granting a few extra thousand dollars they could make this a calling port, which would usdoubtedly be a great boon t> the Island. In faet the business men and farmers must be asleep in not agitating this important macter of direct communic- ation with England and the West Indies There is no doubt, if Dr. Jenkins is elected, that he will do all possible to actomplish this and place our farmers on the same footing, enabling them to compete with the farmers of the provinces of Nova Scotia, Quebec and New Brunswick, and
