The great xpanslnn of the fresh fish industry following World War II, came when the facilities to sup- ply the market were at a very low ebb in Nova Scotia. The Bank schooner fleet had dwindled, as no ships of that type has been built during the war, and many of the L a had TX ,,. - ad or were no longer available.

Another factor that added to the difficulty was the fact that dory- men. like many other of the older skilled workmen. such as sail-main ers and harness-makers. were dif- ficult to find. Newfoundland. the former main source of dorymen, had few fishermen in the postwar period who were willing to accept the hardships of hand line dory fishing on the dreary. cold. New- foundlaad, banks. The salt - bank schooner required a normal crew of twenty-seven men. as they fish- ed with twelve two-man dories. a skipper, a mate and a cook.

When the market for fresh fish outgre the supply. draggers. both large nd small. were operated from a number of ports. These sturdy ships ranged in length from sixty to over a hundred feet and altogether with their equipment. including a t-one-shaped trawl net that gathered fish from the ocean floor. were expensive. and beyond the means of most of the inshore fishermen. Many hundreds of arnaller craft were able to fish only within a comparative short distanca of their home ports. THE L0NG-LfNER .

In other words. a boat that will take me a couple of hundred miles off-shore and get me back with a pay load of fish?"

Mr. Robar got the general idea firmly fixed in his mind and con- sulted William Hines. chief engin- eer. fisheries division. Nova Scot- Ia Department of Trade and Com- merce. who was deeply interested in the designing of a more seawar- thy boat that could be owned by the average in-shore fisherman. The ideas of these men called for a boat that could stay at sea and fish for longer periods. regardlass of weather. and have comfortable working conditions for the crew.

GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE The Nova Scotia Fisherman's Loan Board agreed to help finance the project. it was approved by the Board of Steamship Inspection and the Federal Department of Fisheries offered a subsidy of 3165.00 per gross ton. The David Pauline. the first long-liner. had a cruising range of more than 500 miles. she had ommodation for her crew so they could remain at sea as long as their fuel and sup- plies lasted. Her lines were those of a pleasure cruiser. her frame was oak. She was 55'.& feet long. had a 15 foot beam. a 4'6 foot

draft and was 37',-'x tons gross. She had twin Acadia gas engines and a hold with an icing capacity for 35.000 pounds of fish.

BIPROVEMENTS

Through the efforts of Mr. Hines and others. improvements have been made to the original design. Most long-lincrs now are in the 58- foot class. to meet the maximum requirements so that the owners may secure Government loans and subsidies. in the eight years since the David Pauline was laun- ched. 58 long-liners have joined the fishing fleet. Diesels have re- placed the gas-driven engines. Many scientific gadgets. including echo depth sounds a for locating schools of fish. radios and radio direction finders. ship to shore tele- phmes. automatic steeren and electric lighting are now found (at the new long-liners.

The long-liner has a three-man crew. who lay down the trawl lines from the stern of the boat. These lines are pulled out automatically from their coiled position in the trawl tubs. by the forward motion of the boat. they are anchored and buoyed as they are set. They are then left for a period of some hours and then the skipper in the wheel house guides his craft along the trawl as these lines are hauled aboard by means of an engine- wered "gurdy" within the fish use. A member of the crew gaffs the fish fmm the line. and anoth- er one cleans and throws them into the iced fish bins.

It usually takes from eight to ion hours to lay and haul in the trswls. so that a round trip can be rom- pleted in about one day. and the average catch from each trip is between 7th and 10 tons of fish.

The dining room was tastefully decorated for the occasion with white and blue streamers and white bells. The table was cen- tered with a three-tier wedding cake topped with a miniature bride and groom. The cake was cut in the traditional manner by the honored couple.

After all the guests had par- taken of a sumptuous wedding stip- per. served by Mrs. D.A. Mac- Phee. Mrs. Glen Peardon. Mrs. Austin Fraser. Mrs. John Nichol- son.
