Owing to some misunderstand- ing in the conditions set up for the Southern Kings baseball play- downs it has been found neces- sary for Montague and George- town to play off for the cup. Since Montague had won the first sec- tion, and Peakes the second sec- tion, it was understood that these two teams should play off for the cup, which Montague won from Peakes. However, during this play- off series, Georgetown, the third place team and Cardigan, the fourth place team, played off with Georgetown winning this series. Now it is proposed that Mon- tague must play Georgetown to decide the winner of the summer schedule. The regular meeting of the C. G. I. T. of the United Church was held in the classroom on Thurs- day, September 30th. The meeting opened with the C. G| I. T. Pur- pose and Prayer. The devotional period was led by Helen Hamil- ton and Barbara Mabon read the Scripture. Lorraine MacPhee led in prayer. The president, Helen Ham- ‘ilton presided over a short busi- ness meeting, which was followed by a work period that was spent on knitting fancy work for the bazaar. After a social half-hour the

meeting closed by singing taps.

Mr. and Mrs. Martin Currie who recently left Montague to take up residence in Charlottetown. were guests at the home of Mrs. Elsie Watterworth on Sunday evening when a number of their friends held a social sing-song. After a

‘Early at the break of day Imany care were seen slowly mov- ing along the country roads, as the hunters scanned the fields watch- ing for the nodding heads of the feeding birds. Some hunters re- ported excellent success with one :part.y having flushed nine coveys ‘in three hours which is good flushing. A few reported taking a .bag limit, while others came home ‘without a single prize to mark the day's shooting. On looking over some of the specimens, some were found to be quite small and un- developed, while othera were full grown. Some lained that the lateness of the nesting season might accou r. for the un- derdevelopment of some of the birds. One large covey waa flush- ed which comprised about twenty birds, but on the average the coveya were small. which ia un- doubtedly the result of the past severe winter. There does not seem tobe as many l-luna in evi- dence this year aa last, and many parties were hard put to raise even one covey throughout the morning. The farmers, however, were pleas- ed to note that the gunners exer- cised care while passing through the fields, and this will go a long way in helping the care and in- crease of the Hun population to the benefit of all gunners. -—Lan.

The devotional period vraa conducted by Mrs. A. S. Adams who also gave a ahort talk to the mothers on the joy and im- portance of training the children while they are very young. With Mra. Leslie MacDonald at the piano all joined in singing "Jeaua Loves Me", and "Jeaua Blda Us Shine." The Band prayer "Our Father" waa repeated. Bingo, lunch and dance held in the Town Hall on Monday evening. under the auspices of the George- town Community Welfare League. Bingo was enjoyed by a large num- ber of participants until about 10.30 p. m. following which a lunch was served and the remaining hours of the evening given over to dancing, which was thoroughly cnjojyed. The community Welfare League wishes to thank all those whose patronage made a success- ful and enjoyable evening possib- le. Favoured by ideal weather, on Sunday. September 26th. the sixty-fifth anniversary of the opening of the present Sturgeon United Church was fittingly held. Services were conducted by the minister, the Rev. Sidney J. Boyce B. A., who on behalf of thh congre- gation, gave a cordial welcome to all who gathered in such large numbers and also to the guest preacher, the Rev. Dr. W. S. God- frey, superintendent of Missions for the Maritime Conference of the United Church, Dr, Godfrey gave inspiring messages in which he urged the fullest support of the greatest institution in the world, the Christian Church, and stressed the need of recruits for the Min- istry. The Montag-s. United Church Choir led the service of praise in the afternoon with Mrs. Howard Vickerson presiding at the organ. An Anthem by the Choir and solos by Mrs. Storey and Mr. Howard Vickerson added much to the spiritual tone of the gathering. At the evening worship a selection was rendered by the Sturgeon Choir. solos were given by Mrs. Hooley and Mr. Keith Hooley and duets by lVIi-s. Arthur Jenkins and Mrs._ Myrtle Babineau. Mr, and Mrs. Jack Daigle is still in hospital following an accident which they both encountered while returning by horseand wagon on the highway from blueberry pick- ing. The horse escaped with a few scratches while the wagon was completely demolised. 1W1, Daigle was seriously injured while Mrs. Daigle came out of the accident a little more fortunate.

King's iiounty Board 0f Trade Special Mating

A special dinner meeting of the King's County Board of Trade was held at the Poole Hotel on Sep- tember 30th. with R. W. Beck. U" prQIIdE t, presiding. Followinl I 591mm" dinner served by the manaBt-‘MQII! of the hotel. several speakers de- livered addressee to the meeting. The first speaker was Mr. Vernon MacKay, who with Mr. Don G. Miller, and Mr. David A. Gray, represented the Pictou Board of Trade.

Mr. MacKay referred to the primary item on the agenda, that of the proposed Pictou-George- town winter ferry service, and heartily supported the project. Last fall the Board of Trade held a special meeting at the Curling Rink at which it was proposed to have the Prince Edward Island ferry, which is now at Borden given a winter ferry service be- tween Pictou and Georgetown. This service would be highly ad- vantageous for Prince Edward Io- land, giving it an eastern outlet for produce during the winter season with the mainland. This would reduce transportational costs of many commodities both from and to the Island and Nova Scotia.

Following the address of Mr. MacKay, the secretary read a copy of a resolution forwarded to Dr. Grant, M. P., in January. 1 . also the letters received fro Dr. Grant. Dr. Grant also spoke. ad- vising the Board to proceed with their resolution again this year. He spoke very encuuraglngly of this project, and advised the Board of Trade to renew their efforts.

It was moved by MI. C. A. Shaw and seconded by Mr. E. H. Stewart that a new resolution be drawn up and presented to the proper auth- orities. This motion was carried. The members of the resolution committee comprise, Mr. W. R. Gil- bert, Mr. R. K. Clements, and Mr. Keir Clark. After further discuss- ion and another meeting proposed the meeting closed with the presi- dent, Mr. Beck, thanking the visi- tors from the Pictou Board of Trade for their kindness in attend- ing the meeting.

The Board of Trade has always been to the fore in fostering bet- ter means for trade and com- merce, and their efforts in this project are to be commended, and should receive the support of all who can in any way assist their efforts.—Lan

World-Climate Becoming Warmer?

For e decade now there have been occasional preaa comments that the earth's temperature waa rising. Moat of them merely men- tioned the circumstances, but one or two connected the report with the fact that glaciers in different parts of the world were shrinking: “dylng track," as it were.

And new comes a further report 'that the polar ice cap in the Ant- arctic la thinning out. A Norweg- ian ecieniific expedition headed by Holger Holgeraen, has Just got back to Oslo with the news. The scientist said that evidence of cli- matic changes was gathered in the Bellingheusen Sea, the Amundsen Sea, and on Peter I Island. Ob- servation on that Island showed that many glaciers had been con- siderably reduced since 1929, (when Norway claimed and explor- ed the island). Many places that were then thickly covered with ice and snow are now bare. More than that. the evidence "that the aouth polar climate la softening is con- firmed by the southward movement of the border between the tropical and the polar water.” it is clairn- ed that corresponding changes are taking place in the regions round the North Pole, also.

It cannot have escaped attention that the “water-table", both heré and elsewhere la steadily lowering and that water must be sought at greater depths. That is one of the ways in which a warmer climate works. _

This year is a freak year. (due to sunspota), interjected into the warmer streak, and its influence is but temporary.
