Diep Asroap.—The Winthrop, Mass., Sun con'ains a lengthy obituary notice of Mr, Arthur H. McLaughlin, who died of heart trouble at that place recently. Mr. MecLauchlin was bora in September, 1868 at Hillsborough, Prince Edward Island and there the early veara <f his life wer passed. “He attended the public school at Hillsborough until he entered the Prince of Wales College, from which he graduated at the age of eighteen years. After gradu- ating be taught school for two years, or un- til he went to Wiathrop, in which town he vad lived for eight years before his death Mr McLauchlio was deservedly respected and esteemed by all who knew him.

He spoke of the exodus and the enormous febt and taxation of the Dominion, palmed off a lot of chestnuts on protection, a sub- ject on which it was perfectly clear he wa- 10t well informed, and resumed his seat without a sound of approval.

The frieads of Mr. Martin are more haa pleased with the prospects at Mount s:ewart. It is clear that the Peters boom ¢ a thing of the past. Asin every place e'se he was met with a frown, and found it impossible to excite he slightest indication of approval. Even Mr. Sol Clarke refused to attend the meet- ing.

The electors are having rare fun over the reports of meetings at Winsloe, Trac- idie Cross and other places which have appeared in the Patriot. These reports are repudiated by Welsh and Peters, who are evidently ashamed of them and declare that they had no part ia writing them.

The meeting at Mount Stewart, which was presided over Ly W. H. Douglass, E=q., was in every way creditable to the village and the audience and augured well for the success of Mr. Martin.

A READER'S PROTEST. Sir,—I unders'and the editor of the Guardian at the commencement of this campaign offered the Conservatives and Liberals half a column space in that paper every day in which to discuss the ques- tions at issue in the coming election cam - paign, WhenlI heard of this offer I thought it wasa very kind one. Yesterday morning, however, os reading that paper, I tind that every column in it is given to the Liberal writer, editorial column and all, and the Conservative writer still gets but his half column.

The Patriot newspaper I have always understood was the organ of the Liberal party here. Sut if yesterday moroing’s Guardian isa sample of the contents of that paper, I would suggest that the pat- ronage of the Liberal party be given to it instead of the Patriot, asthey will get much better value for their money. At any rate the Guardian should certainly cease to call itself independent.

Sir,—The Montreal Witness, the organ of the Laurier-Tarte party, recently sug- gested, with reference to Grit boodlers, that they be kept out of sight. Such noto- rious corruptionists as Prefontaine, Mc- Shane, Tarte and others of the so-called Liberal ranks do more harm than good to their party when they make their appear- ance at public meetings. Mr. Laurier has been shrewdly advised by that notoriously Grit organ, the Montreal Witness, when it suggested to its leader the propriety of keeping out of sight the men of soiled hands, polluted by deeds of dishonesty and corruption. The Grit organs of our,Mr. LH Davies, the Grit leader of the or- ganized hypocrisy of the Maritime Pro- vinces, should take the hint from the advice given to Mr. Laurier by his own organ, and administer a like advice to their leader, Mr. Davies, to keep baci¢ and out of sight of public meetings our noto- rious local government boodler, who has already, during his short rule, sunk the Provine into debt to an alarming extent— bordering on five hundred thousand dol- lars—and at the close of the last ression added an additional burden of seventy-five thousand dollars to our already over- burdened farmers. Keep him out of sight, Mr. Davies.

Sir,—In striking contrast with the-con- duct of Mr. Davies in selecting a constit- uency is that of Messrs. Angers, Tailtgn and Desjard:ns ‘They gave up safe afd good positions to run for eeats in the com- mons, not seats held by their own . party friends but by their opponert’. Sd. great is their confidence in the hold that the N. P. has taken on the minds of the electors they are ‘ready to risk everything and march into the enemy’a camp and redeem the teats usurped by means of $35,000 stolen from the Quebec treasury.

Mr. Davies, on the other hand, chooses what he thinks is a soft and easy seat which he can take without risk or trouble. It is currently reported that Mr. Welsh, having lost confilence in his sb:lity to hold his seat in the east riding, refused to run unless his expenses were guaranteed, Wise man, he does not want to lose the seat and his money too. Had Davies possessed the courage to rueh into the breach caused by Welsh’s defection and fight the hard constituency he might have put Mr. Laird up for West Queens. But this did not suit his views. The bitter enmity of the Davies faction, and the well grounded fear that Mr. Laird, if elected, might divide the honors with him at Ut tawa, effectively prevented this consum= mation. The Hon. David Laird is in point of ability and statesmanship #8 much above Messrs, Laurier and Davies as it 18 possib'e to conceive, yet he is male the Cindecella of the party, wa-hing the dirty political dishes and eweeping the fluor when he should be in the parlor, But like the Cinderella of the story Mr. Laird will some day take his rightful place in the Literal party, and show his superiority in every respect to those who are now keep- ing him down.
