The Minister of National Defence has stated that he will need, roughly, 90.000 to 100,000 men for the armed forces and thousands mor will be needed for iticreased lnd trial production.

The part women have played so far has been excellent. Tlzotisnntls of applications for the auxiliaries to the armed forces have conic in ready response. Industry has ab- sorbed many thousands more. This ls good-but we have not yci iti- lizerl all the ability and energy of otir people, to plrice this country on a. Cnmplele war footing.

Australia now has total mobilizi- lion. We must. not wait until the danger of invasion is so (‘10532 to us. -The time to arrange for the total mobilization of our people l5 iiow.

I am convinced that the-re much work “rich could be m i. 0n by women in civilian service; to release men for the forces o: in- dustry. Within each city or area, bureaux could be set up for the supplying of women to fill vacan- cies. Department stores, bakeries and dairies could release young men if women would take over delivery rcutes. Male post office workers and mail carriers could be released if Women were available. Street car conductors and bus drivers might be replaced bv Women. and you will think of many other duties which women could perform 9s well as men. Many young married women could work for a few hours a day if their children were minded at, a creche 0r play centre. Here is where older women! help might be val- uable.
