OTTAWA. Dec. 6-(CP)- T.P. (Tommy) Gcrman, affable. blue- eyed giant of sports promoters, is starting off on one of his ”p:eat- est adventures.”

If past performance is .1 criterion of future succcss,.you can chalk up another one for the colorful Irish- man, and write another chapter in the rags-to-riches story of the "miracle man” of sports promotion.

Gormun has engineered the transfer of Jersey City of the Inter- national Baseball League to Ottawa. Bringing triple "A" bull to the capital is more than a business deal; it's an adventure in sports- manship to widen the horizons of

his favorite city--"The grea test little spqris town in North America."

Will he be successful? Then he began wandering through the managing ranks of the National Hockey League. He fin- ished in 1946 with seven Stanley 'Cup Winners: Three with Ottawa Senators, in 1020, 1921, 1923; one with Chicago Black llawks in 1934; one with Montreal Mriroons in 1985 and two with Montreal Can- adiens in 1944 and 1946,

Flanagan Scores Upset In Decision Over Saddler

DETROIT, Dec. 8 - (AP)-Del Flanagan of st. Paul scored a stunning upset ton.ight when he pounded out a unanimous 10-(round decision over featherweight champ- ion Sandy Saddler in ii. non-title fight that was a roughhouse all the way. Flanagan, a St. Paul lightweight and stablemate of Saddler's arch rival. former feath- erweight King Willie Pep, stunned a small turnout of 5,188 fans as he took a unanimous decision from Saddlns.

It was the 50th link in Flanagan's streak of pro fights without 11.1055 and it practically earned him a shot at lightweight champion Ike William's title in January.

A 2-1 underdog at ringtime, the little known Flanagan won the verdict of all three ring officials.

Saddler and Flanagan made up thei: own version of the rules as they went along and it included everything from butting, to wrest- ling, hitting on the break and a few other tactics.

Mintz said he had been offered the winner of the Will Bean-Clan en-ce Henry bout in Reno. Bean and Henry meet Dec. 19 in Los Angeles.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.. Dec, 7 - (AP) -- Baseball's minor leagues have taken their radio problem to Washingtcn.

George Trautman. president of the National Association of Minor Leagues, said today the conferred for 30 minutes with the ES. At- torney-Cleneral last week on the matter of baseball broadcasts.

He declined to disclose what he had been told.

Trautman and his executive com- mittee huddled with Ccmmissioner A.13. Chandler and a major league committee on the radio situation. The solution still has not been an- nounced. Perhaps it will come out of tomorrow's closed executive ses- slon.

The minors claim widespread brcudcasts of major league games in their cities was an important factor in their 19-per-cent attend- ance decline. They are asking the majors, who control the rights, for relief.

Indications were that the majors. alert to the situation, would make concessions. )

In 1950 the broadcasts were piped into the, minor cities except when the minor club actually was play- ing at hcme -- or 40 minutes before game time. As most of the minors played at night, this left the after- noons wide open for the big league games,

The minors claim fans heard so much baseball during the day that they didn't bother going out to see the minor league game at night.

Just how far the majors are will- ing in go in curtailing these bread- casts is not known. But some changes may be made.

The Department of Justice is in- terested from a restraint of trade possibility standpoint. It has made no public nile on the matter but has discussed the problem with big league lawyers and executives sev- eral times.

The high school rule. under fire for some time. Probably will be scrapped when the ccntract runs out. Dec. 31. 1951. Many baseball men want the right to talk to and negotiate with high school players before they graduate. Under the present rule, no high school boy can be signed until he or his class graduates.

The minors polished off their "delayed" draft by selecting six more players for 39.800. The final total cf the three-day selection was 154 players for 8345.700. Last year 222 were drafted for 3449.050.

Sir.-May I begin by Itatins. that I am not wrltinl 88' an in- dividual but on behalf of a large number of members of the P. E.

Islanders Hockey Club (whose names. if required are readily available). and with whom I

wholeheartedly agree on the fol- lowing subject.

The animosity. which has sud- denly arisen within our ranks, is felt by many of us to be thor- oughly unnecessary and should be causing our executive no little concern. '

It was indeed unfortunate that on Tuesday night, the delight. with- which we watched our boys so decisively trounce "the so- called team to beat" had to be overshadowed by the news. that our executive, at a meeting held immediately before the game, had decided not to string along with our President. I say "'our President". because I was at the meeting last summer when we unanimously voted Tom Rogers in as President. I have been among the many who have acclaimed him for the splendid job he hus done since this Club was in its embryo Stage and I was among the 300 Club members who rose and gave him the ovation he do- served on Monday night. as we carried a vote of confidence in him. -However, I was also among the many who voiced my utter disgust. upon learning, that. less than 24 hours after we enthus- iastically made Tom Rogers the recipient of the heartiest vote of confidence I have ever witnessed anywhere, our executive saw fit to replace him. There is a point which should be made perfectly clear. however. I personally hold nothing but re- spect for Dr. Dougan. and this is the opinion of practically every- one to whom I spoke yesterday. I quite realize what Dr. Charlie has contributed to sport In Char- lottetown and would not question for one moment his qualifications Or ability to lead our Hockey Club. I hold him in the highest esteem and personally gave him two votes. when we elected our executive on Monday night. But these facts. pertinent though they may be. do not explain why Dr. Charlie or anyone else should replace Tom Rogers be our President against the wish so obviously expressed by some 300 of us on Monday night. I can assure you, Sir. that had we had the slightest suspicion that this could possibly happen. we definitely would have moved. seconded, carried and placed on record. that our wish was to have Tom Rogers carry on until he saw fit to resign or was no longer doing" a satisfactory job. For the information of those who 'do not know, when we were attempting to organize this Club. I brought. in more pledges than anyone but our good friend Roddy MacDonald. I have been at every single Club meeting and my wife and I have missed only one hockey game. Furthermore. I don't intend to complain about the extra 10c and suggest that our anonymous friend of last Friday forezo his hot dog and do likewise. I therefore feel that I am qualified to act as spokesman for a rink-full of good club mem- bers and respectfully submit that a mistake has been made and ask of our Executive to Dledle OX- plain (at a Ipeclal meeting). why the man who fostered this idea, who has shown -profound interest at all times, who has dug into his own pocket for advertising. etc., to an extent which few of us appreciate. who has ral-lied us at times when many of us were willing to throw in the IPOIIKE. who has got on famously with both players and club members,- now that everything he has hop- ed and (prayed!) for is coming about, has been replaced. Directors of the Islanders Hock- ey Club, Inc., held a scheduled meeting at the Forum last night to discuss routine affairs.

It was revealed later that rum- ors that one or two players in ad- dition to Kevin Conway were neg- otiating for transfers to profes- sional clubs were entirely without foundation. Likewise the story giv- en credence in some quarters that the club was being moved to Am- herst was branded as "ridiculous." It was also 'announced at the meeting that the deal concerning Conway moving to the Pacific Coast Hockey League has not been closed.

Tmnspqrtatlon arrangements for the game at Amherst with Moncton on Monday night were talked over, keeping in mind that a number of fans might accompany the team if a return to the Island can be made the same night. An 'announcement will be made later if the carferry crossings are suit- able.

The resignation of Major T. B. Rogers as a Club Director was ac- cepted with regret. Major Rogers was elected as 1st Vice-President of the Club at a directors meet- in; Tuesday night. but asked to be excused from accepting the office.
