short flight of terrestrial stairs where dilapidated saucepans and other culinary utensils had been ignominiously abandon- ed Sy the cook. Then he knocked at the second closed door which confronted him and was almost immediately after faced Ly the entire household.

“For his coming had not been unobserv- ed, Everybody was there to meet him, but nobody was there to greet him—not at least with a kindly welcome. The several pairs of feminine eyes focused upon him expressed various degreeé of wrath, fear, contempt and repulsion. The mistress of the house was young and pretty, but ber face was set like a flint Yet she had the kindest heart in the world. But when the tramp asked her fora bite to eat she ordered the cook to band out acup of coffee, a boiled egg, left over from the family table, and some bread and butter. Then she gave the cook —by a glauce ot warning—a tip regarding the silver. The forks and spoons in that family were genuine aud heirlooms, 80 the tramp ate his breakfast in the prim itive fashion which obtained before knives and forks were invented. He seemed to have refined instiucts in table etiquette, and the egg, which was soft boiled, rather bothered him, until he made a bit of the bread serve as a spoon. It was embarrassing, too, to eat with the mistress of the house watching him. It was more embarrassing to have her sud- denly ask:

“Why are.you a tramp ?"’

“T cannot get work, ma’am.”

“Have you tried ?”’

“Yes’in. Look at my hands!”

She started back; for being versed in the social fad of palmistry she read in the palms he showed her the story of failure and defeat, and saw a life-line broken rudely ereithad reached half its natural limiit.

“Where did you sleep last night ?”’

“In the station in the town beyond.”

Again she thought of the silver, and half closed the door which she held asa barrier between herand this alien of his kind, who was making a paper napkin from atorn sheet lying near. It struck the young hostess forcibly that her guest was consistent with his surroundings. He was eating from a bread-board laid overa fiour barrel, his implements being the ten servants that wait on man—his fingers.

“It was my first night in the station- house,” he continued apologetically. ‘J had money of my own until last week— enough te buy lodgings. It being the holidays, it’s hard to get work. Have you any work I can do to pay for my break- fast ?’’

She wanted to test him and prove that he was lazy and worthless,so that her conscience might never reproach her judg- ment, and she bade him carry a large packing-trunk, on one endof which he was seated, to the attic, a distance of three flights of stairs.

“I couldn’t do it, ma'am.’

She noticed that he didn’t say “lady,” as professional tramps do.

“lam too weak from wart of regular food to liftor carry anything heavy, but I could do light chores. I can carry coal in or empty ashes, or clean—the silver,”’

There was a sparkle of caustic mirth— it could hardly be called impudence—in his black-luster eyes, and his hostess actually shrunk inalarm at his sugges- tion.

-**You are welcome to your breakfast,” she said coldly, and moved as if: to close the door.

“Thank you, ma’am; I’m going en, so you won’t see me again, but I wan't to say something. The church grand, don’t they? And you are going to church to put mogey in the plate for the heathen and to pay for charity. And you have fed me this morning in His treme. If He came to ask one single meal of your charity, would you give Hima cold bite outside inthe freezing blast, orask Him in, and seat Him by a warm fire *”

“Christ would not have robbed and per- haps murdered me for duing good.”

“Nor would I. There are desperadoes in the highest circles of society as well as in the ranks of the outcast. But do you not think it kinder to keep a dog and not put your charity to such a severe strain? “The greatest of these is charity,’ reads in the revised edition ‘the greatest of these is love.’ Have 1 been enjoying Christian charity or Christian love, this morning ?”

As she did not auswer he resumed his side of the discussion.

“It would have taken a few moments of your servant's time to warm the cup of vold coffee you gave me; and isasilver spoon of more account than the comfort of a being who has a soul? I would not have stolen the spoon, but you could not kuow that. Perhaps, ma’am, you have read ‘Les Miserables,’ aud recall the old Uishop, the silver candlestick, and Jean Valjean ?”

Atthis moment the housemaid thrust something into the hand of her mistress— uot the one holding the door, buat the other which, held batk, seemed asking for assistance. It was a toy pistol in silver and ivory which now reposed in the pink uptufned palm, which resented thé in- trusion.

“Take it away and briug me my pocket- book,” she said in a half whisper. When that came she opened it and took a dollar irom: its folds.

“That is the amount I would have given to the collection this morning. Take it, and at the first epportunity buy a warm meal. Andif you come this way again I will trust you to eat under my roof and give you a spoon.”’

“Give me half the money, and save the rest for my brother.”

“You have a brother, then, who isa tramp

“Every tramp is my brother and yours, in Christ, or the religion taught is a farce. He had not where to lay His head ; neither have we. I shaJjl not come this way again to tax your hospitality, but you will re- member me and hereafter make yourself a cheerful giver whom the Lord loves.”

He put on his disreputable cap and hob- bled away, leaving an astonished humse- hold gazing after him. The cook and the housemaid had plenty to say about his im- pudence, but the young mistress held her peace. She was struggling for the first time with the great problem of the day, why men become tramps. When she re- linquished her hold on the door, which had shut her inand that other member of the humau family out, she went to her husband, who was ready for church.

“T am not going this morning,” she said. “I have had the whole service, even to the collection ;”’ aud she related lier ex- perience with tne tramp.

It did not reassure her to be told that

she had aided criminality and that her offering would doubtless be exchanged for liquor, but she had begun the building of a bridge of trust, and somehow its archi- tecture pleased her. She reasoned with the later-day poet whose verse she had read with scarcely a thought of its application :

‘He can't be altogether bad,

This outeast among meu.”

After that she dropped the theory and took up the practice of that much Inuded virtue—charity.

A SMALL MAN. An Enterprising Littte Newsboy Attracts Attention.

I was attracted by a little newsboy. It Was evident that he had not been selling papers very long, for he did not mingle with the other boys, and the childish voice WHS Very Weak as he cried his wares. His clothes were neat, but very old and care fully Patched. Around his neck was a clean collar and a home-made necktie that had once beena piece of a black alpaca ress. Everything about him betekened that a loving mother’s hand had tried to make her boy appear like a little gentle- man as he went out to sell his papers. I talked witii the young news merchant, and found that he lived with his mother, and she is « crippled widow, with none but him to vely upon. For four years of

And as [left him the lines of care aud thought already drawn about the face that had not yet lost the innocence of babyhoo i, and the pieture of a crippled mother proud of her boy, and suffering that he must early in the morning of life do the work that be- longs to its midday hours, the penury of living on $2 a week, and yet the happiness of saving a few cents, made me look in a new way upon the little fellows who, running around corners, darting into streetcars and dodging between p..ssers- by upon the streets, try to keep the public informed and themselves from starving.— Washington Star.

Salt and Swearing.

A scene was witnessed in the court ofa local magistrate at Berlinchen, im the Mark, a few days ago. No sooner Mad one of the witnesses, a woman, appeared to wive evidence, than the accused, who was was also a woman, started up and scream- ed out excitedly, “I object to that wit ness.” The judge asked for her reason “That womav, Herr Richter,’’ sald the defendant, “swears whatever she pleases, and takes no harm by it. The moment she says ‘I swear,’ she lays a piece of salt upon her breast and then tells any lie withont danger. When she goes ont of court she will throw the salt away, so that her false witness will not burt her soul.’’

The accused had scarcely ended her ex- position of this odd doctrine of the local creed, when the witness cried out, in- dignantly, “Herr Richter, it is not true ; I have not a particle of salt about me.”’ And hereupon tnis Prussian Phryne, like her Greek prototype, confirmed her word by her deed; she tore open her dress, exposed her full bust to the court and invited the judge to see for himself whether she had taken any such precaution to absolve her soul from the guilt of perjury. The judge had hard work to quiet the two angry ladies, one of whom loudly affirmed, and the other as loudly denied, the presence of salt somewhere.—Notes and Queries.

Fun in a Palace.

Avery comical incident, which made the German Emperor laugh until the tears rolled down his cheeks, is reported from the.Berlin court. His youngest ebild, the princess, who had been resting during the afternoon, was being dressed, and the lady in waiting, being somewhat sleepy herself, did not think of dressing the child in time, and then hurried the matter up as much as possible. The Em- press, coming jnto the room while the chil still stood on a chair next to her bed, wanted to embrace and kiss the child, but as she put her onthe floor the little one fell down and cried. The doctor was called at once by telephone, and pronoun- ced it immediately a case of paralytic stroke. He gave orders to undress the child, in order to be able to find out wheth- er it was the right or the left side which was paralyzed. With trembling hands the imperial mother herself began to un- dress rer daughter, when she suddenly gave au exclamation of mingled surprise and joy—the sleepy lady in waiting had placed both legs of the little princess into one side of an inexpressible bifurcated garment.

We Do Not Exercise Enough.

Mr. William Blaikie in one of his stim- ulating and entertaining talks about phy- sical exercise remarks that running is a lost artamong American women. “It is said that they run just fast enough for a mab to catch them, but I have seen some what could not run that fast. They cannot rug gracefully.’’ Mr. Blaikie here told about how the girls at Vassar run flat- footed. Girls are weak in their arms. If they do not believe this let them try to raise themselves on a bar till their chin rests on their hands. For good brain ex- ercise rich blood is required for the brain, and only exercise can furnish this, There is noremedy for nervous diseases like muscular exercise. In nearly every dis- ease there is congestion. Get the great pumping organ, the heart to going. We hear a great deal about malaria. A lot of Irishmen were at work digging up a sew- erin New York and the hollow-chested clerks in the stores near by got malaria. There were some men who did not get malaria ; they were the Irishmen who were working hard and had their noses vieht down in it.
