That Mr. Longworth is, at once, a leading citizen and a leading farmer.

That Mr. Longworth’s election will, therefore be, at once, creditable to the cit- izens and complimentary to the farmers.

That Mr. Longworth is, personally, more deeply interested than almost any other man in the economical administration of Provincial affairs and in .the reduction of Provincial taxation.

That Mr. Longworth is opposed to the erection, by outsiders, of certain public works which his opponent has good golden reasons for believing should be erected by outsiders.

That Mr. Longworth is strongly in favor of the abolition of the Legislative Council, and of applying the money annually wasted upon it to public works which are required.

That Mr. Longworth is strenuously op- posed to the obnoxious combination called a Government, of which his opponent is

- —> + <P +e <- ical The Independence of the City Council. ;

Tue application of the law for securing the independence of the City Council will lead: first, to several Ward elections ; second, to the abolition of the practice of Councillors voting money into their own pockets ; third, to the election of men who will not go into the City Council merely, or primarly, for the purpose of securing the patronage of the City to their particular business. The application of the law will, therefore, we think, be, on the whole, beneficial to the citizens at large. It ought, at least, to ‘ensure the selection of in- dependent and unselfish Councillors. Of course, it may be pushed too far. In the cases of Messrs. Morris and Heartz, the offences which led to their withdrawal seem te be very trivial. We think the line should be drawn somewhere. But most decidedly are we of the opinion that it should not be drawn, as it is, at share- holders in Water and Gas Companies. If shareholders in Gas and Water Companies, having heavy coniracts with the City Council, may properly be permitted to be City Councillors, it is diffieult to see why any other, direct or indirect, contractor should be excluded. However this may be, the Mayor undoubtedly did right in ap- plying the law when brought to his notice.

The Belfast Partial Hlection.

Anoavus D. McMrtan, Esq., the Liberal- Conservative candidate for the seat vacated by Mr. J. F. Robertson, has advertised a series of meetings to be held throughout the District. It is likely that Mr. Me- Millan will receive an almost unanimous support. In fact, we have not yet heard whether or not the Local Government will dare +o bring a candidate into the field.

An aged French Deputy and strong Legi- timist, who died twelve years ago in Paris, desired to leave $220,000 to the Count de Chambord, whom he regarded as the only rightful monarch of France. Fearing that his will might not be executed, he be- queated the property .to Madame Conord, an old servant of the family, requesting her to present it tothe Count on his decease, as her personal gift. The old woman com- plied; and, proceeding to Frohsdorf, dis- played to the astonished Count 1,100,000 francs in bank notes. He requested her to keep the extra 100,000 as a reward for

her probity, but she would receive nothing, and returning to Paris, entered the service of another master. A month ago the old) woman died at the age of 85, and 89,000) francs was found infher bureau. It was’ chiefly derived from an income of 6,900. francs a year which the Count had insis +1 on her receiving. She would spend nose of it, and relied solely upon her wages. | Her sister was summoned as the natural inheritor, but soon a notary appeared with awill,in which the Count, was named as her sole legatee. —---—— © a=-~————* i The fai! hints that circumstances may lead to interchanges of the offices in the new Cabi net, and that it is possible one of the most im- portant departments will be divided anda minor one abolished. It also says that it is known that in 1873 Sir John McDonald was maturing a pom of appointing junior repre- sentatives of some of the chiet departments, | with seats in the house, and it is presumed he will not abandon his intention. The same psper intimates that Mr. Buckingham’s reten- tion of tie office of Deputy Minister of the Interior, to which he was appointed in the last week of his administration by Mr. Mc-| Kenzie, is not likel Sir John McDonald.

THE AMHERST MYSTERY.

What Possesses Esther Cox?—The Extraordinary Phenomenon at Daniel Teed’s House—A Puzzle

for Scientists—or ©thers.

THE PLACE AND THE PEOPLE.

Running im a southerly direction from Church street, Amherst, and parallel with Main street, is a thoroughfare which leads in the direction of the railway station. A short distance below Church street corner is the house occupied by Mr. Daniel Teed, a respected resicent of the town, i“ < holds a position in the Amherst Shoe actory. The house, which has nothing remarkable in its appearance, 15 situated gable end to the street, and is an ordinary two-story dwelling. Im the rearis & barn, to which

we shall refer. There is nothing remark- able about the appearance of the place, nor is there anything suggestive of the uncanny in the general air of cheerfulness which srevails. The occupants of the house are Mr. Teed, his wife and inant, Miss Esther Cox and Miss Jane Cox. The last named are sisters of Mrs. Teed, and are young women past twenty years of age. Miss Esther is the central figure in the story. Sie1s a robus} girl,with every appearance of health, and with a cheerful disposition. She 1s

undoubtedly possessed of a highly magnetic!

temperament, and would be called a power- ful medium. Her health has been good, and she has lived until recently undisturbed by mysterious influences, and in ignorance of the theories or practices of spiritualistic mediums. Under ordinary conditions she might have lived so until the end of her life, but being ill and suffering from severe nervous prostration, accompanied by men- tal excitement, she became the instrument of the extraordinary developments here- after mentioned. THE FIRST INDICATION

of anything unusual was a mesmeric trance, by which she was overcome during her early illness, eight weeks ago. Dr. T. W. Car- rittee treated her so as to overcome the nervous prostration and bring the system nearer its normal condition. In this he was apparently successful; but her body continued surcharged with electricity toa very remarkable degree. One night she re- tired to bed with her sister Jane, and scarcely had she done so when a noise was heard in a pasteboard box, containing scraps of cloths, which was under the bed. Little attention was paid to this, as it was sup- posed to be the work of a mouse, nor were the girls much disturbed when they heard it in the straw of the ticking. They went to sleep and their slumbers were not inter- rupted.

On the following night they again retired, and again the mysterious noise was heard. This time it was of a more positivé charac- ter, for the box was violently overturned. Much alarmed, the sisters called their brother, who responded to their call, right ed the box, placed the cover on it, and set it in the middle of the floor. The effect wes most surprising, for not only was the box again overturned, but.the cover

and landed on top of the table. As often as the test was made, so often did the same result follow, and as was natural enough, muck alarm was felt at these extraordinary manifestations.

The Unknown (we hardly know the term to apply to it) now entered upon its work in earnest, and for four nights it continued its freaks, varying its method of working on each occasion. Whenthe girls went to bed, it would seize the quilts and drag them to one corner of the bed, pillows would be pulled from under Esther's head by the in- visible influence, and with such force was this done that she was unable to hold on and prevent the articles moving. The brief interval of rest was succeeded by

and since Friday, the 20th of September, the scenes around Mr. Teed’s house have bave been such as to surprise and perplex hundreds of intelligent men of all classes who have gathered at the house night after night to hear, to see and be thoroughly con- vinced that, whatever it may be, there is no frand or deception on the part of the in- mates of the house. We shall not attempt to describe all that has happened and can be sworn to by the leading c'ergymen, pro- fessional. men and other residents of Amherst, but will summarize a few of the ineidents which we have hoard from most reliable eye witnesses, and after careful personal inquiry.

The rappings which we have mentioned are of two kinds, light and heavy, or one may be termed a rapping and the other a pounding. It isthe latter which is the most remarkable and which naturally fills the ordinary hearer with awe. It is liable to come at any time, but is always in Esther’s vicinity. Mr. John White went to the house one morning and Esther went out to the barn.

_ A TERRIFIC POUNDING,

which is deseribed as resembling a hundred 56-puund weights falling in succession on the roof, commenced at once and con- tinued until Esther ran back to the house. This pounding has always been loud when she has gone to the barn, but it has been fully as loud around the house. When Esther goes into the cellar, it sounds as if

A MARVELLOUS STORY, and one which Dr. Carritte can verify on oath is yet te be told. One evening the girls were lying in bed, while the Doctor, in order to test matters, sat outside the bed- room door.

Mr. Teed was also in the hall. The bed was in plain sight from the door, though in a wide recess, and the Doctor could see the girls as they lay with their arms crossed outside of the quilt. Suddenly one of the girls called out, ** Look, Doctor, the clothes are moving!’ He looked and saw that they were moving, as they had often ioved before. He took his eyes off of them fora second, as he turned to call Mr. Teed’s at- tention, and as he did so, there was a loud noise in the room and the door began to press against his foot as if some one was pushing it. He looked at it and was aston- ished to find that all the bed-clothes had come across the room in a heap and was pressing against the door.

Esther says she saw BLACK HAND

A GREAT on one occasion, but we consider that this was only an hallucination, one of the effects of a mind being intensely wrought upon. It is only a day or two since three gentle- men went into the cellar and one of them received a violent blew on the forehead from this invisible Something. It slaps Esther quite frequently, and it has also made sev- eral attacks on Jane. The most remarkable of these was one night when both girls were lying in bed together, with the light burn- ing and their hands and arms lying outside of the coverlid. Suddenly Jane cried ont,

‘ou, DOCTOR, IT HAS GOT HOLD OF ME.”

The doctor at once ran to the bed and dis- covered that some invisible agency had rip- ped open the front of her garment and had left on her chest marks as if a red-hot hand had been passed over it. The marks were the color of a scratch two or three days old, but there was no abrasion of the skin. We may here mention, as A VERY SINGULAR THING

that the controlling influence in these phenomena is not supposed to be a spirit, but is faithfully believed by the family to be a young man whois now in a‘distant part of the Province. He is not a person who ever had any influence over Esther, and she has regarded him with strong dis- like. He left Amherst seddenly after Esther was taken ill, but prior to her illness he is said to have talked to her in such a violent and extraordinary way as to cause her much alarm and leaves a vivid impres- sion of him on her mind. Such is the rumor, and it is certain that she speaks of him with strong dislike. The reason for believing the influence to come from him is that the

Esther is not a facile writer, but when she takes a pencil in her hand and places it against the wall, it is guided by an influence which she can- not resist, and writes sentences of which she has not the most remote thought. We are sorry to say that some oi these sentences are very wicked ones, and are

MOST HORRIBLY PROFANE. The writing is not at all like Esther’s, but it is said to be exactly like that of a man in question. Not only is the language far from choice, and such as Esther is not cap- able of using, but the spelling is most at- rocious. ‘‘I ded rit to her Cister,” is in- tended to signify ‘‘I did write to her sis- ter.” There have been freaks which are STILL MORE EXTRAORDINARY,
