Kinssvac, Cape’ Colony, Jan. 17.— A patrol composed of sixteen men-of the New South Wales Lancers and South Australians was ambushed yesterday by Boeis and overwhelmed after a severe fight. Two of the detachment escaped and have arrived in camp.

This morning a patrol visited the scene of the fight and found five dead Au-tr:1- ians and one wounded map.

A pumber of dead Boers and horses were also found, showing tliat the Aus- tralians made a gallant fight before surs rendering.

ANNANDALE SCHOOL,

On the Thursday preceding the New Yeara goodly number of rate-payers of this district met in our school-room,which was fittingly decorated, te witness and take part in the semi-annual examination of their sehool. The examivation began about one o’clock, p. m., and continued without intermission until three, during which time the Aunandale boys and girls acquiited themselves in a manner that was creditable to their parente and painstaking and worthy teacher. A pleasing pro-~ gramme was given by the pupils, and in turm, ap ample Christmas tree, iaden with the season’s greetings which were distri- buted amongtbem tothe delight of all, especially the smailer ones.

Many encouraging remarks were made regarding the teacher and pupile, by the parents and visitors, everyone expressing saiisfaction at the progress made since last meeting,ard the pleasing results of Arbor day in the work of adorning and improving the school grounds.

Among the speakers wa: Mr. H. Smith, teacher of an neighboring district, who very efficiently sided in the examina- tion.
