BLAME 23 DEATHS YESTERDAY ON A L HEAT WAVE OVER MUCH OF THE ll.S.

CHICAGO (CP) - At least 8! deaths were attributed Wednesday to a record heat waye which hit Large sections of the United states.

However. a cool front out of the Rockies was tailing the heat across ihe west and brought hope to Itates hard-hit by the aorching weather.

Oklahoma recorded ll. heat deaths. Missouri 1. Colorado 4 (all irownings), Illinois 3. Kentucky 2. and Iowa. Louisiana. Nebraska, Kansas and Pennsylvania 1 each. rhe drownings were mostly deaths at persons seeking relief from the extreme heat.

SAULT STE. MARIE. Mich. (CP)-Helium - filled plastic bal- loons will carry crews of mice and fruit flies 17 miles into the stratos- phere this month from bases in Michigan as part of a scientific re- search project to obtain cosmic ray data.

The tests are being run by the United States air force working with the Winzen Research Inc.. of St. Paul. Minn.

ST. JOHN'S. Nfld.. (CP)-A giant iceberg 276 feet above sea level is floating near the shone of Conception Bay on New- Newfoundland's east coast.

The berg, a freshwater glacier with one-eighth of it above wat- er, is about 14 miles from shore. Another iceberg, 150 feet high, is also in the bay. Warnings have been lmued to all ships in the area.
