In two homes in Charlottetown yesterday the conversst on concerned the ever current event-foodwln the form of sandwiches and small cakes and cookies. Not too small though for wisdom told them that since their guests were miles the cakes and sandwiches must be nt least large enough for several good mouthfuls. Charlottetown's New Year re- ceptions never lack true hospitality and 1931 began on Monday with goodwill and friendship to-all men.

It is gratifying to governments and organizations interested in

r finding cuss of tuberculosis to see

the large numlber of apparently healthy individuals undergoing X- ray film examinations for tuber- culosis. in addition to those with real or suspected lung trouble. A simple and fairly trustworthy method of looking for tuberculosis is what is called miniature radio- graphy ix-ray) films, only 4 by 5 inches in size.

In American Heart Journal. Drs. A. R. Maihison. W. Moriis and G. B. Wilson. Vancouver, 13. c.. report their experience in finding heart disease cases from examination of these small films. If heart disease was suspected. a large film, 14 by 17. was taken. Fluroroscopy and electrocardiograms were done where there was any question of heart disease being present. Frrtn a total of over 7000 electrocardio- grams. 158 showed abnormal heart conditions - high blood pressure, thickening of blood vessels leading to heart. rheumatic heart disease. heart disease due to overactive gland, and heart disease present at birth (congenital). There were 33 of this number who did not think my symptoms present were due to heart disease. In this some period. only 22 cases of tuberculosis were discovered, 13 active and 9 appar- entlv arrested.

All of the heart cases were en- paged in strenuous occupations. ft is this group that can be helped by a change in employment. so that they can make a living at the sort. of work their heart CIn.Wll:hll.nhd safely.

Further. the discovery of these heart conditions make! it possible for, surgeons to perform operations which will not only save life but will enable these irnllviduals to earn a. living. Formerly patients born with disease due to malform- ation of the heart at birth died early. often before reaching their teens. surgical operation prolongs their lives for many years.

while there have been a few or!- ticisms of the coctof the general of communulties large and small. these observations show that the man chest x-rav .survey is an excellent method of finding unknown cases of heart disease as well as tuberculosis.
