CYITAWA, June B0—(CIP)—Plens to give veteran: top priorities in purchasing farm rnechliery and surplus war assets through regular retail channels today were rlnced before the Veterans Committee of the Commons by J.. S. Crawford, farm equipment chief of the Vet- erans Land Act.

He suggested it was feasible for veterans’ certificates of need and identification to be recognized as binding and primary by dealers now handling the trucks, tractors and automobiles turned over hy the Government's War Assets Cor- poration, Repeated complaints have been heard against the pre- sent loose system of priority for veterans.

W. S. Woods. deputy Veterans Minister. said War Assets Corpor- ation had rejected individual deal- ing with veterans because it would mean establishing n retail organ- ization of its own across Canada.

Further, it had found “adminis- tratively impractical" a suggestion of a government interdepartmen- tal committcc that individual vet- erans he given riorities through W. A. C. local o fices which would be binding o-n dealers.

Again, Mr. Woods considered it impractical for the Veterans Dc- partment to act as a retailing in- termediary for veterans.

Adjournment saw no final dc- cision but thcne was agreement that officials of Departments cau- cerned should be called in to aid further study.

Mr. Crawford told the Commrt- tee a shortage of farm machincry had led to plans with the manti- far-turing industry to give top priority to overseas veterans "with a definite need."

Overseas men would get priority certificates from the Land Act Offices across Canada and .\e felt that dealers would welcome tlieilt as somctir-ng which would settle their problem of deciding between qualified veterans and longtime local contacts. both o-f whom hap- pened to need the some piccc-s of machinery.
